In het eerste hoofdstuk van dit boek leest u hoe planten groeien, hoe tuiniers gebruik kunnen maken van de diverse groeiwijzen door via snoeien en leiden allerlei effecten te creëren, en hoe snoeigereedschap wordt gebruikt. De hoofdstukken daarna zijn per plantentype gerangschikt. Elk hoofdstuk begint met specifieke informatie over het plantentype in kwestie - de typen en vormen binnen de plantengroep, basissnoei en specifieke snoei- en leitechnieken, de eisen van pas geplante en al volgroeide exemplaren en verjongingssnoei. Vervolgens worden in elk hoofdstuk per plant de eisen ten aanzien van de snoei van talloze soorten behandeld. In de gedeelten over sierbomen en sierstruiken en klimplanten zijn de planten op botanische naam geordend in alfabetische secties. De planten in de gedeelten over boom- en kleinfruit en rozen daarentegen zijn, om nodeloze herhaling te voorkomen, gegroepeerd aan de hand van de manier waarop ze worden gesnoeid en geleid. Rozen worden bijvoorbeeld geteeld in vier algemene vormen, en de planten zijn daarom niet op alfabet ingedeeld, maar in de groepen moderne struikrozen, stamrozen, struikrozen en klimrozen. Door het hele boek heen zijn er speciale bladzijden en kaders waarin specifieke groepen platen of technieken aan de orde komen.

The central questions of this book are how technologies decline, how societies deal with technologies in decline, and how governance may be explicitly oriented towards parting with 'undesirable' technology. Surprisingly, these questions are fairly novel. Thus far, the dominant interest in historical, economic, sociological and political studies of technology has been to understand how novelty emerges, how innovation can open up new opportunities and how such processes may be supported. This innovation bias reflects how in the last centuries modern societies have embraced technology as a vehicle of progress. It is timely, however, to broaden the social study of technology and society: next to considering the rise of technologies, their fall should be addressed, too. Dealing with technologies in decline is an important challenge or our times, as socio-technical systems are increasingly part of the problems of climate change, biodiversity loss, social inequalities and geo-political tensions. This volume presents empirical studies of technologies in decline, as well as conceptual clarifications and theoretical deepening. Technologies in Decline presents an emerging research agenda for the study of technological decline, emphasising the need for a plurality of perspectives. Given that destabilisation and discontinuation are seen as a way to accelerate sustainability transitions, this book will be of interest to academics, students and policy makers researching and working in the areas of sustainability science and policy, economic geography, innovation studies, and science and technology studies.

This book presents the neurobiology of orthodontics according to the most recently acquired knowledge on the interaction of the brain activity with the senses. In particular, it highlights the ability of orofacial sensory input to modulate and change the brain activity underlying functions of the stomatognathic system, such as chewing, biting, speech, and occlusal feedback. The approach adopted thereby represents a significant departure from the theory and practice of traditional orthodontics, in which malocclusions of the teeth have been interpreted as deriving from DNA coding errors. The described new conceptualization of the etiology and diagnosis of malocclusions has profound implications for orthodontic therapy, as is clearly explained. Orthodontic therapy in turn has significant effects on the brain, which are documented in a chapter devoted to neuroimaging methods. By opening up new and creative pathways in the world of orthodontics, this book will hopefully both educate and excite the practitioner. It is recommended reading for all orthodontists.
