Cardiac implanted devices provide not only therapy but also information on the clinical status of a patient. While beneficial, this increasing complexity also means that all clinicians must be knowledgeable about device function, indications for device use, and device follow-up. The second edition of Cardiac Pacing for the Clinician will provide a succinct, yet comprehensive reference for the implantation and follow-up of implantable cardiac rhythm devices. It is intended to be a practical guide for the day-to-day management of these increasingly complex devices, and is intended for all physicians caring for patients with cardiac implanted devices. Fred M. Kusumoto, M.D., is Associate Professor of Medicine, Director Electrophysiology and Pacing Service, Division of Cardiovascular Diseases, Department of Medicine, Mayo Clinic, Jacksonville, Florida. Nora F. Goldschlager, M.D., is Professor of Clinical Medicine, Co-Director Cardiology Division, Director, Pacemaker Clinic, ECG Laboratory and Coronary Care Unit, San Francisco General Hospital, University of California San Francisco School of Medicine, San Francisco, California.

Pacing and defibrillation have become the leading therapeutic treatments of heart rhythm disorders, including bradycardia and tachycardia. The history of the successful development of bioelectric therapies includes the development of experimental and theoretical methodologies, novel bioengineering approaches and state-of-the-art clinical implantable device therapies. This volume will present a uniform thematic collection of reviews written by the leading basic and applied scientists working in basic bioengineering research laboratories, who have contributed to the development of current understanding of the fundamental mechanisms of pacing and electrophysiology, and who are at the leading edge of further developments in electrotherapy. Igor R. Efimov, Ph.D., is Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering, Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri. Mark W. Kroll, Ph.D., is Adjunct Professor Biomedical Engineering, California Polytechnic University and University of Minnesota.. Patrick J. Tchou, M.D. is in the Section of Cardiac Electrophysiology and Pacing at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. .

Heart failure affects over 5 million patients in the United States alone, and is a chronic and debilitating disease. While a number of pharmacologic therapies have shown varying degrees of effectiveness, many recent advances in the treatment of heart failure has focused on device based therapies. In Device Therapy in Heart Failure, William H. Maisel and a panel of authorities on the use and implementation of device based therapies provide a comprehensive overview of the current and developing technologies that are used to treat heart failure. Individual chapters provide an in-depth analysis of devices such as CRT’s and ICD’s, while broader topics such as the pathophysiology of heart failure and its current medical therapies are also discussed. Additional topics include Pacing and Defibrillation for Atrial Arrhythmias, Atrial Fibrillation Ablation, and Percutaneous Treatment of Coronary Artery Disease.
