Teaching Dialogue Interpreting is one of the very few book-length contributions that cross the research-to-training boundary in dialogue interpreting. The volume is innovative in at least three ways. First, it brings together experts working in areas as diverse as business interpreting, court interpreting, medical interpreting, and interpreting for the media, who represent a wide range of theoretical and methodological approaches. Second, it addresses instructors and course designers in higher education, but may also be used for refresher courses and/or retraining of in-service interpreters and bilingual staff. Third, and most important, it provides a set of resources, which, while research driven, are also readily usable in the classroom – either together or separately – depending on specific training needs and/or research interests. The collection thus makes a significant contribution in curriculum design for interpreter education.

Si les Européens peuvent aisément comprendre que pour un Chinois "l'Union européenne joue un rôle important dans le maintien de l'équilibre du monde sur le plan économique", ils auront peut-être plus de mal à admettre qu'ils sont globalement perçus comme arrogants, et physiquement tous pareils : "Les Européens sont tous blonds aux yeux verts". Au-delà des blessures narcissiques éventuelles, l'intérêt de cette enquête qualitative menée par une équipe sino-française à Canton sur la vie quotidienne et la consommation entre 1999 et 2001 est d'abord de montrer les images positives et négatives que les Chinois se font des Européens, afin de permettre un meilleur ajustement des arguments des uns et des autres, dans le cadre de négociations internationales notamment. En ouvrant un pan de la culture chinoise dans ce qu'elle a de plus moderne, la consommation au quotidien, ce livre permet de mesurer le chemin parcouru par la Chine depuis la Révolution culturelle et, par là, sa part de proximité avec le monde occidental.

Entre 1687 et 1740, l’Europe découvre pour la première fois une somme importante de textes chinois traduits directement en français, par les missionnaires jésuites résidant en Chine. « S’instruire de la Chine par la Chine même » est leur idéal affiché. Vu de Chine, pourtant, c’est une tout autre histoire, riche en contradictions et en surprises, qui entoure la genèse de ces traductions. Entre l’étude de la langue, les batailles d’idées philosophiques et les enquêtes sur les sciences et les arts, entre les textes lus et le monde vu, l’ouvrage de Wu Huiyi révèle les multiples facettes de l’expérience missionnaire du XVIIIe siècle qui est à l’origine d’un profond renouveau des connaissances sur la Chine en Europe.
