Abstract

Earth is a natural building material that is at once traditional and modern. In recent years it has advanced to become a high-quality material. Its aesthetic qualities and character along with its beneficial effect on the indoor climate and general well-being are widely recognised. Of particular relevance are its environmental properties and the unparalleled low energy balance of many earth building materials. As an authentic historical building material, earth is also widely used in the conservation and renovation of historic buildings. This book provides a compact overview of the current state of the art of earth construction and planning practice in Germany ; where earth building applications and products are of a particularly high standard. " Earth Building Practice " offers architects, engineers and building tradesmen from around the world the opportunity to benefit from the experience of earth construction in Germany.

Abstract

This work introduces the initial results of research at sites occupied by Native Americans in the Sinnamary basin (1660-220 BP), carried ont at the time of the construction of the Petit Saut dam by Electricité de France in French Guyana. A methodological approach pertaining to the tropical sylvan and riparian milieu is followed by a study of the open-air sites, and a commentary focusing on the phenomenon of terra preta and palaeolithic fires. For the first time a typological framework and a vocabulary are proposed for reference to lithic scenes and polishing-tool sites. This work also includes a study of ceramics using two complementary approaches: determination of place of manufacture based on the Chemical make-up of the pestes employed, and codification of the forms and motifs of the 22,000 objects registered. Following up on the publication devoted to the colonial period in this region (dAf 60), this volume makes a significant contribution to the renewal of historiographical work on the Guyana plateau.

Abstract

For over 25 years, Martin Rauch has been at the forefront of research and development in all aspects of rammed earthed construction. As proper design with earth can only come from truly understanding the material, he would now like to share his experience and knowledge of this construction material in a design manual. The publication goes beyond projects to focus on structural elements, such as the design and layout of floors, walls, ceilings and openings, which are clearly explained with detailed project information from structures previously realised by Martin Rauch. Various examples help to illustrate how to overcome structural engineering difficulties in earth construction and the design possibilities that result from these solutions. Essays about earth as a material and its particular aspects in the areas of building biology, building physics and construction permits complete this fundamental work. - Martin Rauch's experience of over 25 years of practical application in earth construction- From design details and craftsmanship to prefabrication and industrial production- A wide range of various solutions for specific design tasks using completed structures as examples Seit über 25 Jahren leistet Martin Rauch Forschung und Entwicklung in allen Bereichen des Bauens mit Stampflehm.
