Ce livre constitue la première étude du rôle de la génération dans les systèmes philosophiques d’Aristote et d’Averroès (1126-1198). En s’appuyant sur de nombreux textes traduits du grec, de l’arabe et du latin, l’auteur propose une nouvelle lecture de la théorie aristotélicienne de la génération, ainsi qu’une interprétation de son renouvellement par le Commentateur. Les traités majeurs consacrés par Averroès à la physique générale, à la théorie des éléments et à la biologie d’Aristote sont, pour la première fois, examinés dans leur rapport mutuel et dans celui qu’ils entretiennent à la métaphysique. Cette étude transversale révèle les nouveaux enjeux philosophiques et épistémologiques au fondement du système d’Averroès : dans la lignée de l’aristotélisme essentialiste d’Alexandre d’Aphrodise et tout en réfutant la doctrine créationniste de certains théologiens de l’Islam, le philosophe cordouan établit le fondement a posteriori de tout savoir humain. La philosophie d’Averroès est ainsi réinterprétée comme un jalon fondamental d’une histoire qui, du monde grec à la modernité, scelle le destin commun de la philosophie naturelle et de la métaphysique.

As a philosopher, psychologist, and physician, the German thinker Hermann Lotze (1817-81) defies classification. Working in the mid-nineteenth-century era of programmatic realism, he critically reviewed and rearranged theories and concepts in books on pathology, physiology, medical psychology, anthropology, history, aesthetics, metaphysics, logic, and religion. Leading anatomists and physiologists reworked his hypotheses about the central and autonomic nervous systems. Dozens of fin-de-siècle philosophical contemporaries emulated him, yet often without acknowledgment, precisely because he had made conjecture and refutation into a method. In spite of Lotze's status as a pivotal figure in nineteenth-century intellectual thought, no complete treatment of his work exists, and certainly no effort to take account of the feminist secondary literature. Hermann Lotze: An Intellectual Biography is the first full-length historical study of Lotze's intellectual origins, scientific community, institutional context, and worldwide reception.

Prominent Arab intellectuals of our century, Christian, Muslim, secularist and fundamentalist, consider the disregard for the rationalism of Averroes (Ibn Rušd, 1126-1198), who once stirred Europe with his commentaries on Aristotle, to be a major reason for the decay of Islamic culture. They criticize both Islamic reform movements and mere westernization and try with Ibn Rušd's help to spread critical, rational and realistic thinking, in order to place the Arabs on a cultural par with the West. This volume analyzes for the first time the different philosophical and historical approaches and social aims of authors like Faraḥ Anṭūn, Muḥammad 'Ammāra, Muḥammad al-Ǧābirī, ḥasan ḥanafī and ṭayyib Tīzīnī within the framework of the Arabic reception of Ibn Rušd since the end of the 19th century. This work was rewarded with the Ernst-Reuther-Preis for outstanding dissertations.

Averroes the philosopher was the Commentator of Aristotle. In this, the project of his life coincided with the perception of his contemporary readers and with the esteem governing four centuries of European Aristotelianism. It has been the purpose of the 4th Symposium Averroicum to contribute to a better understanding of this philosophy: both on the basis of Averroes' works and in the light of his sources. The Symposium, held in conjunction with the 6th Editors Conference of the Averrois Opera , brought together eminent scholars and researchers on Averroes and adjacent areas. Their contributions are presented in four sections: - The Project of Averroes - Averroes and the Hellenistic Commentators - Averroes, the Commentator - Averroes and the Latin Tradition A bibliography of editions and contributions to the text is appended (to date 1998).
