Légitimiste par fidélité, Alfred de Falloux œuvra à la restauration des Bourbons mais, esprit libéral, son attrait pour le libéralisme politique l'amenait à côtoyer l'orléanisme. Ce syncrétisme politique en faisait davantage un royaliste fusionniste, trajectoire partagée avec Berryer ; Falloux fut royaliste plutôt que légitimiste et qu'orléaniste. Un positionnement au sein de la mouvance royaliste qui lui fit aimer davantage le comte de Chambord que celui-ci n'aima Falloux. La dimension chrétienne de Falloux fut à l'épicentre de son action politique. Ministre de l'Instruction publique et des Cultes, il s'attacha à accroître l'influence de l'Église sur la société à travers la loi scolaire de 1850 et la prédominance de Rome par l'ascendant de l'ultramontanisme sur le gallicanisme. La religion lui apparaissant comme la gardienne de l'ordre social, Falloux prit la défense du pouvoir temporel du pape à l'occasion du Risorgimento. Son catholicisme libéral l'amena à affronter, non sans déchirements mais toujours dans un souci de transigeantisme, le magistère contre-révolutionnaire de Pie IX et à se rallier à celui, transigeant, de Léon XIII. Par sa condition sociale, ses relations politiques et familières, par ses engagements politiques et religieux, Falloux s'insère dans son siècle en participant à tous les grands débats politiques du XIXe siècle. Les grands débats spirituels et intellectuels lui sont étrangers, contrairement à son ami Charles de Montalembert et à son ennemi Louis Veuillot ; Falloux s'inscrit dans le catholicisme du XIXe siècle en politique plutôt qu'en intellectuel. L'Académie française lui fit l'honneur de le compter parmi les siens, à l'occasion de la politique de résistance menée par l'honorable Institution contre le Second Empire. Successeur de Molé, Falloux mena une activité académique discrète mais influente au sein du parti des Politiques. Homme de terroir, Falloux se considérait angevin et ruraliste. Studies on Ctesias’ Persika are much in demand. Scholars consult the history of the sequence of the three Near Eastern world empires in 23 books on the history of the Ancient Near East, and as a source for Graeco-Persian relations and Greek memorial culture of the 4th century B.C. Others are interested in the varied Greek images of the East, in the origin of the concept of „Oriental Despotism“ or in the powerful pattern of a sequence of world empires, and thus come across the work of the Cnidian doctor. Finally, the Persika – whose genre affiliation is still as controversial as the author’s role as an eye witness – also figure prominently in the debates on the origins of the Greek novel.It was a central concern of the conference at Salzau Castle near Kiel in May 2006 to gain new access to this fascinating work. The conference’s contributions which are presented in this volume tread new paths by paying particular attention to Ctesias’ precursors and contemporaries, and to the contemporary oriental tradition. Also, single parts as well as the main themes of the Persika are examined more closely.

Towards the end of the fifth century BC Ctesias of Cnidus wrote his 23 book History of Persia. Ctesias is a remarkable figure: he lived and worked in the Persian court and, as a doctor, tended to the world's most powerful kings and queens. This Special Issue of Crystals contains papers focusing on various properties of conducting ceramics. Multiple aspects of both the research and application of this group of materials have been addressed. Conducting ceramics are the wide group of mostly oxide materials which play crucial roles in various technical applications, especially in the context of the harvesting and storage of energy. Without ion-conducting oxides, such as yttria-stabilized zirconia, doped ceria devices such as solid oxide fuel cells would not exist, not to mention the wide group of other ion conductors which can be applied in batteries or even electrolyzers, besides fuel cells. The works published in this Special Issue tackle experimental results as well as general theoretical trends in the field of ceramic conductors, or electroceramics, as it is often referred to.

Depuis plus de dix ans, le système d’échange de quotas d’émission de gaz à effet de serre (SEQE) constitue le principal outil de l’Union européenne et de ses États membres pour lutter contre les changements climatiques. Ce système couvre aujourd’hui plus de 11.000 entreprises issues principalement des secteurs industriels et de l’aviation. Jusqu’à son adoption, ce type d’institution juridique était pourtant inconnu en droit de l’Union. Bien que fixant des objectifs de réduction des émissions précis, le SEQE s’écarte cependant de la rigidité des voies traditionnellement suivies dans le domaine de l’environnement. Il se caractérise, en effet, par la flexibilité offerte aux entreprises, leur permettant d’échanger des quotas d’émission et, partant, de préserver la liberté de leurs stratégies industrielles. Pour concilier les impératifs environnementaux, économiques et sociaux, le SEQE s’appuie sur un complexe entrelacs de textes législatifs et réglementaires. Plus encore, les compromis politiques sont à la source de nombreuses dérogations et exceptions. Fort de ces constats, l’ouvrage analyse comment les législateurs européens et nationaux, sous le contrôle du juge de l’Union, entendent combattre le réchauffement planétaire sans pour autant mettre en péril les principes d’égalité et de libre concurrence au sein du marché intérieur. Cet ouvrage se présente ainsi comme un outil précieux pour tous ceux, praticiens ou actifs dans les milieux académiques, qui s’intéressent au droit du climat et au SEQE.
