Doelstelling: Deze scriptie is een vertaalkundige studie die onderzoekt op welke manier metaforische uitdrukkingen uit Duitse krantenartikels (Spiegel Online) weergegeven worden in Russische vertalingen (InoSMI). Daarna wordt onderzocht welke keuze de Russische vertaler maakt om de metafoor te vertalen (eerst per brondomein, daarna over het geheel): substitution, translation ‘sensu stricto' of paraphrase. Middelen of methode: Er werd een corpus samengesteld van tien recent vertaalde Russische krantenartikels van de site InoSMI en de analoge Duitse krantenartikels uit Spiegel Online. Daarna werden alle metaforen uit Spiegel Online en hun vertaalde equivalent uit InoSMI verzameld en ingedeeld in 20 geselecteerde brondomeinen. 188 van de 286 metaforische uitdrukkingen bleken relevant voor dit onderzoek. De overige 98 konden niet ondergebracht worden in 1 van de 20 brondomeinen. Per brondomein kon dan bekeken worden hoeveel metaforische uitdrukkingen er letterlijk vertaald werden (translation ‘sensu stricto'), vervangen werden door een andere metafoor (substitution) of beschreven werden (paraphrase), om daarna over het geheel een conclusie te trekken. Deze scriptie baseert zich vooral op de werken van Kövecses (2010), Toury (1995) en Van den Broeck (1981). Resultaten: In 66 procent van de gevallen neemt de Russische vertaler de metaforische uitdrukking over (translation ‘sensu stricto'). Een vierde van de metaforische uitdrukkingen werd omschreven door een niet-metafoor (paraphrase). Slechts in acht procent koos de Russische vertaler ervoor de metafoor te vervangen door een andere metafoor (substitution). We kunnen dus stellen dat, ondanks cultuurverschillen, metaforen over het algemeen relatief letterlijk overgenomen worden, ook als de Russische lezer niet zo vertrouwd is met de bewuste Duitse metafoor.

This book presents a complete method for the identification of metaphor in language at the level of word use. It is based on extensive methodological and empirical corpus-linguistic research in two languages, English and Dutch. The method is formulated as an explicit manual of instructions covering one chapter, the method being a development and refinement of the popular MIP procedure presented by the Pragglejaz Group in 2007. The extended version is called MIPVU, as it was developed at VU University Amsterdam. Its application is demonstrated in five case studies addressing metaphor in English news texts, conversations, fiction, and academic texts, and Dutch news texts and conversations. Two methodological chapters follow reporting a series of successful reliability tests and a series of post hoc troubleshooting exercises. The final chapter presents a first empirical analysis of the findings, and shows what this type of methodological attention can mean for research and theory.
