Abstract

Internationally renowned experts have provided data on their own studies, and discuss the relative usefulness of their work in relation to diabetic nephropathy. The first section describes the novel role of intrarenal renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) and oxidative stress in the development of diabetic nephropathy and discusses the current and novel pharmacological interventions in the treatment of diabetic nephropathy. The second section discusses other important contributors outside of the RAAS in the pathogenesis of diabetic nephropathy including AGE/RAGE, epithelial-mesenchymal-transition (EMT) and immune cytokines. Abstract

This book presents the latest information on the clinical-pathological features of diabetic kidney disease. The data included is based on a cohort study of biopsy-proven diabetic nephropathy patients and nephrosclerosis patients, who were observed over a long term, and on the long-term registry for diabetic nephropathy (diabetic kidney disease) in Japan. It provides a clinical-pathological axis in clinical settings, including differential pathological/clinical diagnoses of CKD in diabetic patients (e.g. the presence of “classic” diabetic nephropathy and/or nephrosclerosis and/or other primary kidney diseases). The abundant biopsy specimens with long-term medical records provide a detailed pathological and clinical description. The book also includes urine-sample data for developing and validating possible candidates for novel biomarkers for diabetic kidney disease. Many countries, including Japan, have ageing populations, in which nephrosclerosis contributes to the progression of kidney lesions in patients with diabetic kidney disease. As such, a comparison of a diabetic nephropathy cohort with nephrosclerosis is indispensable to offer better treatments. This comprehensive and informative book is an indispensible reference resource for all physicians and researchers in the field of nephrology and diabetes. .

Abstract

Autophagy (“auto-digestion”), a lysosome-dependent process, degrades and turns over damaged or senescent organelles and proteins. Autophagy is a highly regulated process that impacts several vital cellular responses, including inflammation, cell death, energy metabolism, and homeostasis of organelles (mitochondria and others). Although the role of autophagy in the maintenance of tissue homeostasis is well documented, its role during tissue injury and regeneration is still emerging. In this Special Issue on “Autophagy in Tissue Injury and Homeostasis”, we focus on the roles of autophagy in systemic, specific tissue (organs/cells) injury or organ failure associated with sepsis, inflammation, metabolic disorder, toxic chemicals, ischemia-reperfusion injury, hypoxic oxidative stress, tissue fibrosis, trauma, and nutrient starvation. The knowledge gained from the identification and characterization of new molecular mechanisms will shed light on biomedical applications for tissue protection through the modulation of autophagy.

Abstract

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is still associated with high morbidity and mortality incidence rates, and also bears an elevated risk of chronic kidney disease in the sequel. Whereas the kidney has a remarkable capacity for regeneration after injury and may recover completely depending on the type of renal lesions, the options for clinical intervention are restricted to fluid management and extracorporeal kidney support. The development of novel therapies to prevent AKI, to improve renal regeneration capacity after AKI, and to preserve renal function—in both the short- and long-term—is urgently needed. This Special Issue includes papers investigating the pathological mechanisms of renal inflammation and AKI and diagnostics using new biomarkers. Furthermore, experimental in vitro and in vivo studies examining potential new approaches to attenuate kidney dysfunction are included, as well as review articles.
