Abstract

This book offers a comprehensive review on biomass resources, examples of biorefineries and corresponding products. The first part of this book covers topics such as different biorefinery resources from agriculture, wood processing residues and transport logistics of plant biomass. In the second part, expert contributors present biorefinery concepts of different biomass feedstocks, including vegetable-oils, sugarcane, starch, lignocellulose and microalgae. Readers will find here a summary of the syngas utilization and the bio-oil characterization and potential use as an alternative renewable fuel and source for chemical feedstocks. Particular attention is also given to the anaerobic digestion-based and Organosolv biorefineries. The last part of the book examines relevant products and components such as alcohols, hydrocarbons, bioplastics and lignin, and offers a sustainability evaluation of biorefineries.

Abstract

These volumes contain the contributions to the Second European Conference on Unsaturated Soils, E-UNSAT 2012, held in Napoli, Italy, in June 2012. The event is the second of a series of European conferences, and follows the first successful one, organised in Durham, UK, in 2008. The conference series is supported by Technical Committee 106 of the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering on Unsaturated Soils. The published contributions were selected after a careful peer-review process. A collection of more than one hundred papers is included, addressing the three thematic areas experimental, including advances in testing techniques and soil behaviour, modelling, covering theoretical and constitutive issues together with numerical and physical modelling, and engineering, focusing on approaches, case histories and geo-environmental themes. The areas of application of the papers embrace most of the geotechnical problems related to unsaturated soils. Increasing interest in geo-environmental problems, including chemical coupling, marks new perspectives in unsaturated soil mechanics. This book will provide a valuable up-to-date reference across the subject for both researchers and practitioners.

Abstract

The increasing need for functional flexibility (the number of wireless standards is large and expected to grow) and the exploding cost of system-on-chip design will make implementation of wireless standards on reconfigurable radios the only viable option in the future. Software Defined Radios (SDRs) will offer higher flexibility at lower cost. Moreover, they are key enablers in the realization of cognitive radios, which will enable more efficient use of network and spectral resources. Green SDRs will be essential, to save on crucial and scarce resources: energy and spectrum. Green Software Defined Radios gives insight in the trends asking for green SDRs. The essential ingredients of these radios are elaborated on. Specifically, design solutions and approaches for energy-scalable SDRs, both for the radio front-end and the digital baseband (including hardware and software), are explained. Intelligent (cross-layer) control is introduced as the key to achieve energy efficient operation and seamless connectivity. Last but not least the book focuses on cognitive radios, opening a new wireless order. These radios build on SDR platforms, enhanced with a sensing engine and intelligent control.

Abstract

An up-to-date text on climate change focussing on technical solutions for the most important and climate relevant economic sectors is presented. It is intended for key decision makers, and administrators within industry, agricultural and energy sectors, as well as masters students and post graduates. The first of three sections covers the scientific basis of climate change and the instruments to prevent or reduce negative climate effects. It includes a survey covering current practices at different levels. The second discusses evaluation methods for climate impacts from industrial processes. Climate relevant processes and measures to reduce their impact such as sequestration are defined in the final section, with the main focus being on renewable resources. Details are given on climate impacts of waste prevention, recycling and waste management as well as are proposals for every day solutions.
