Featuring the work of over 200 designers from around the world, the 13th edition of this yearbook presents a wide-ranging collection of objects from contemporary culture and a diverse approach to the idea of domestic design. It includes work by established designers such as Michele de Lucchi and Ross Lovegrove, and newer names such as the young Swiss design group, N2, and a new furniture range from film director David Lynch. From his perspective as a designer who has been creating products for 40 years, the editor draws attention to the revolution being brought about by technical and scientific developments. As in past editions, the book incorporates furniture, lighting, tableware, textiles and products, whilst drawing attention to the increasingly blurred boundaries between domestic and industrial design, and between the home and the work-place. Details technical data accompanies the illustrations, and a reference section includes designer's biographies, a list of suppliers and their addresses, and an update of design acquisisitons at major international museums.

The editor for this edition of the "International Design Yearbook" is the French architect and designer Jean Nouvel, whose search for direct archetypal forms has led him to the work of designers such as Henk Stellinga, Rudolf Sachs, Dieter Sieger, Ross Lovegrove and Enzo Mari. Among the themes that emerge are the importance of recyclable and low-energy design, and a concern for modular designs that can adapt to changing living spaces and different lifestyles. His selection establishes a new view of design fundamentals, in which the function of a design, the quality of modern materials, and the intuition of the designer combine to form and inform the final work. Full technical data is included, plus detailed biographies of the designers, a list of suppliers' addresses, and an update of design acquisitions at the major museums around the world.

This reference book provides a review of domestic design around the world, featuring furniture, lighting, tableware, textiles and products created in the last 18 months. This year's selection was made by the Czechoslovakian architect and designer Borek Sipek, whose original furniture and glassware have received international acclaim. The book spans designers such as Phillipe Starck, Etorre Sottsass and Achille Castiglioni and that of lesser known designers and students. Commentaries by Rick Poyner, contributing editor to "Blueprint" magazine and editor of the graphics magazine "Eye", highlight new tendencies and focus on individual designers, providing a background to their latest work. Full technical data is given for each design and a reference section includes biographies of the designers, details of suppliers, a directory of design publications and an update of acquisitions by the contemporary design collections of major museums worldwide.
