This work attempts to counteract the essentialism of originary thinking in the contemporary era by providing a new reading of a relatively understudied corpus of literature from a ambivalently stereotyped diasporic group, in order to rethink and problematise the concept of diaspora as a spatial concept. As work situated in the Law-in-Literature movement, beyond the disciplinary boundaries of scholarship, this book aims to construct a 'literary jurisprudence' of diaspora space, deconstructing space in order to question what it means to be 'settled' in literary refractions of the lawscape by drawing on refractions of case law in a corpus of texts by Romani authors. These texts are used as hermeutic framings to draw unique spatio-temporal landscapes through which the reader can explore the refractive, reflective, interpretative conditions of legality as a crucible in which to theorise law.The radical intent of this work, therefore, is to deconstruct jurisprudential spatial order in order to theorize diaspora space, in the context of the Roma Diaspora. This work will offer readers new possibilities to re-imagine diaspora through law and literature and provides an innovative critical interdisciplinary analysis of the shaping of space.

We cannot fully understand the development of Roman poetry if we ignore the works that survive only in fragments, or that are known only through "ations or allusions. During the last two decades, studies on this topic have been fostered by the collections of Courtney, Hollis and Blänsdorf, but there is still room for further improvement in editing and discussing the fragments of the Latin non-dramatic poets. This volume gathers together ten essays, most of which were discussed in a Seminar held in Bologna in 2014; they can be seen as case studies that confront the main issues of the research on Roman poetic fragments, such as textual criticism and interpretation, authorship, prosody and colometry, literary genre, and the connection between "ation and context. These papers do not deal only with texts already known, but suggest some new additions to the corpus of the Fragmenta poetarum Latinorum. In a methodological introduction, the editor also provides an up-to-date review of the scholarship on the subject, that aims to supplement Blänsdorf’s bibliography. For all these reasons, this volume will be of primary relevance to students and scholars in Classical philology.

This is the 11th volume of Variants: the Journal of the European Society for Textual Scholarship . Founded in 2002, Variants provides an international, interdisciplinary and comparative forum for the theory and practice of textual scholarship without restriction as to language, region or period. With its traditionally strong focus on textual editing in the electronic era, this issue has no less than four articles on the frameworks, principles and aspects of state of the art digital editions and best practice in the use of computers in scholarly editing. Other contributions are devoted to the sociology of texts, authorial agency, modern codicology, and the problems of editing large text traditions in English, German, Lithuanian, Portuguese and Spanish literature and history.

Berlin’s Neidhart Manuscript R (Lower Austria, ca. 1280) contains ten songs that are supplemented by verses written in the margin. These verses are testament to a variance of versions that has not been taken into account by any edition so far. This study explores these variants, thereby making an important contribution to the transmission history and textual criticism of Neidhart’s songs. Die Berliner Neidhart-Handschrift R (mgf 1062 [Niederösterreich, ca. 1280]) enthält zehn Lieder, zu denen am Blattrand Strophen nachgetragen sind. Diese z.T. mit Zuordnungszeichen versehenen Randstrophen zeugen von einer Textvarianz, die bislang in keiner Ausgabe berücksichtigt wurde. Die vorliegende Studie erprobt an diesem begrenzten Textbestand Möglichkeiten und Grenzen der Erschließung von Fassungsvarianten, die den erhaltenen Handschriften zeitlich vorausgehen. Einen Anhaltspunkt hierfür liefern die bereits im 19. Jh. konstatierten spezifischen Verteilungsverhältnisse von Wort- und Versvarianten in der Überlieferung. Diese nämlich führen zur Vermutung, dass die Neidhart-Überlieferung auf eine Vorlage mit Wahlmöglichkeiten zurückgeht – d.h. auf eine Vorlage, die zu einzelnen Textelementen alternative Lesarten bot, zwischen denen bei der Liedproduktion gewählt werden konnte. Auf der Basis dieses Textentstehungsmodells lässt sich – so die These des vorliegenden Buches – die in R angezeigte Fassungsvarianz weitgehend rekonstruieren. Das Buch liefert damit einen grundlegenden Beitrag zur Überlieferungsgeschichte und Textkritik von Neidharts Liedern.

This is an original collection of exemplary emendations made by ancient and modern scholars. Single examples are analysed in order to extract a method of emendation. The author reviews some attractive interventions which offer a model of textual criticism: a kind of ideal museum of critical intelligence applied to corruptions or cryptocorruptions which have damaged some Greek and Latin literary texts. All Greek and Latin passages included are literally translated and commented step by step. Advanced students and scholars are offered an orderly sequence of ‘cruces’ healed by great philologists so that a teaching route is granted.
