Abstract

This book addresses the science of artificial and design theory in the context of the scientific research development environment. The author discusses the concepts, activities and techniques associated with the emerging methodology Design Science Research (DSR). Further, he examines the main challenges for its implementation, based on an analysis of the DSR literature, variations of DSR (i.e. Action Design Research, and Grounded Design), and the applicability of DSR in various disciplines related to innovation, both within and outside of the professional school. As a result, this book goes beyond conceptual issues of DSR, presenting and discussing more pragmatic issues and challenges faced by researchers. Design Science Research Methodology offers researchers in a variety of disciplines an examination of the various phases of scientific research development and communication. José Osvaldo De Sordi is Lecturer/Researcher of the PhD Program in Administration at Centro Universitário Campo Limpo Paulista (UNIFACCAMP), Brazil and Professor of the Administration course at Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP), Brazil. He has published 10 books, two of them focused on the development of scientific research. This book is a translation of an original Portuguese edition. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation.

Abstract

Intellectual property rights are a key element in today's knowledge economy. Specifically, the use of patents as transactional elements has become widespread. However, the market for patents possesses specific features that differentiate it from other markets. This book provides evidence for its existence and addresses its particular conditions. It also takes a deep dive into patent intermediaries, discussing how they emerged, their activity and business models, as well as their impact on market structure, firms, and societies. Patent intermediaries participate in market transactions by offering various services and by bridging supply and demand of patents. In the last decades, some of them (so-called pejoratively 'patent trolls') have become popular for their aggressive litigiousness. However, the activity and presence of patent intermediaries are much more significant. To enhance our understanding of the role of patent intermediaries, the authors provide a comprehensive review of the role of these agents in the Economy. Mario Benassi is Full Professor of Management and Business Administration at the University of Milan (Italy), Department of Economics, Management and Quantitative Methods. He is also one of the founders of the Milano School of Management. His main research areas include management of IP and new organizational forms. Benassi's numerous publications have appeared in international leading journals. Miryam Martin-Sanchez is a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Milan (Italy). She obtained her Ph.D., focused on patent intermediaries, at the University of the Balearic Islands (Spain). Her research analyzes how patent litigation influences firms' strategies. Martin-Sanchez has visited Santa Clara University (USA), among other leading institutions.

Abstract

This volume contributes to the construction of a multi-voice mosaic on the theme of Nature and the relationship between Man (understood as designer) and Nature by emphasizing the innovative and sustainable proposals coming from the discipline of design, in its many facets and interdisciplinary contributions. Since it isn’t discussed the creative and economic effort that designers, institutions and companies have been leading for years to improve human living conditions, preference will be given to scientific contributions (unpublished or not yet fully known case studies, projects of strategies, products, systems and services, theoretical contributions, communication) that are an expression of a new approach to Nature, seen as our ally and object of an ethics of care. The focus is the design both in its role as innovation driver and interpreter of social evolution, that must be considered within the human-nature relationship. The topics identify some of the most relevant fields of development in which "Design Driven Innovation" can be developed in the respect of perspective of a new relationship with nature.

Abstract

Abstract

This book supports companies in the transport sector, political decision-makers, transport engineers, planners and scientists doing fundamental research who are confronted by growing challenges in transport. These challenges arise from a number of powerful socio-technical trends, including: digitalisation, globalisation, urbanisation, and the requirements of individual users and the increased need to reduce environmental impact of transport. Providing the innovations required to cope with these challenges is not a simple matter. Towards Innovative Transport Systems structures and compiles theoretical foundations from evolutionary economics, the sociology of technology and innovation research in a way that provides a broad understanding of innovation processes without demanding prior knowledge. Using the Concept of Transport System Evolution (CTSE), it explains in depth the economics of innovation in the transport sector, thus contextualising processes, drivers and obstacles at work in current practice; among such processes are the changeover to electric mobility, the realization of autonomous cars, the revival of railway by innovations and dealing with disruptive innovations in transport. The CTSE is an approach to making concrete the multi-level perspective for the transport sector introduced by Frank Geels. On the basis of the CTSE, the author proposes principles for a novel innovation policy in transport that can serve the reader as a guide when making strategic decisions. .
