This book systematically analyzes how and why China has expectedly lost and then surprisingly gained ground in the quest to solve the complicated environmental problem of air pollution over the past two decades. Yuan Xu shines a light on how China's sulfur dioxide emissions rose quickly in tandem with rapid economic growth but then dropped to a level not seen for at least four decades. Despite this favorable mitigation outcome, Xu details how this stemmed from a litany of policy stumbles within the Chinese context of no democracy and a lack of sound rule of law. Throughout this book, the author examines China's environmental governance and strategy and how they shape environmental policy. The chapters weave together a goal-centered governance model that China has adopted of centralized goal setting, decentralized goal attainment, decentralized policy making and implementation. Xu concludes that this model provides compelling evidence that China's worst environmental years reside in the past. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of Chinese environmental policy and governance, air pollution, climate change and sustainable development, as well as practitioners and policy makers working in these fields. This monograph records progress in approximation theory and harmonic analysis on balls and spheres, and presents contemporary material that will be useful to analysts in this area. While the first part of the book contains mainstream material on the subject, the second and the third parts deal with more specialized topics, such as analysis in weight spaces with reflection invariant weight functions, and analysis on balls and simplexes. The last part of the book features several applications, including cubature formulas, distribution of points on the sphere, and the reconstruction algorithm in computerized tomography. This book is directed at researchers and advanced graduate students in analysis. Mathematicians who are familiar with Fourier analysis and harmonic analysis will understand many of the concepts that appear in this manuscript: spherical harmonics, the Hardy-Littlewood maximal function, the Marcinkiewicz multiplier theorem, the Riesz transform, and doubling weights are all familiar tools to researchers in this area.

This is the first modern book on orthogonal polynomials of several variables, which are interesting both as objects of study and as tools used in multivariate analysis, including approximations and numerical integration. The book, which is intended both as an introduction to the subject and as a reference, presents the theory in elegant form and with modern concepts and notation. It introduces the general theory and emphasizes the classical types of orthogonal polynomials whose weight functions are supported on standard domains such as the cube, the simplex, the sphere and the ball, or those of Gaussian type, for which fairly explicit formulae exist. The approach is a blend of classical analysis and symmetry-group-theoretic methods. Reflection groups are used to motivate and classify symmetries of weight functions and the associated polynomials. The book will be welcomed by research mathematicians and applied scientists, including applied mathematicians, physicists, chemists and engineers.

As a unique case in this Advanced Courses book series, the authors have jointly written this introduction to h-harmonics and Dunkl transforms. These are extensions of the ordinary spherical harmonics and Fourier transforms, in which the usual Lebesgue measure is replaced by a reflection-invariant weighted measure. The theory, originally introduced by C. Dunkl, has been expanded on by many authors over the last 20 years. These notes provide an overview of what has been developed so far. The first chapter gives a brief recount of the basics of ordinary spherical harmonics and the Fourier transform. The Dunkl operators, the intertwining operators between partial derivatives and the Dunkl operators are introduced and discussed in the second chapter. The next three chapters are devoted to analysis on the sphere, and the final two chapters to the Dunkl transform. The authors’ focus is on the analysis side of both h-harmonics and Dunkl transforms. The need for background knowledge on reflection groups is kept to a bare minimum.
