"New information and communications technologies have revolutionized daily life and work in the 21st century. This insightful book demonstrates how telework has evolved in the last four decades, as technological developments have improved our capacity to work remotely. Based on a new conceptual framework, this book explores the global variations in telework, examining the effects on working conditions and individual and organizational performance. Breaking the traditional intellectual conception that telework is performed only in the home, this book surveys the full breadth of working environments, as technology allows employees increased working mobility. Contributors expose a profound ambiguity surrounding the effects of 21st-century telework, revealing that its advantages and disadvantages may simply be two sides of the same coin. This timely book is crucial reading for researchers of labour and employment interested in the evolution of contemporary telework and the influence of modern technologies in the workplace. Policy-makers will also benefit from this book's concrete policy recommendations to improve the practice of telework"--

Annotation "Covering the vast majority of current and emerging home networking technologies, standards, and trends, this practical resource offers a comprehensive understanding of this developing area. Home Networking Technologies and Standards presents an "end-to-end reference architecture," in which the main residential services are identified and their network requirements are fully analyzed. Professionals find detailed coverage of both wireless and wireline technologies, including IEEE 802.11, Firewire, USB, HiperLAN, Bluetooth, IrDA, DECT, X10, and HomePNA, along with higher-layer technologies like OSGi, UPnP, HAVI, and VHN. The book explains how the technologies work, how they have evolved, what their capabilities are, and what markets they target. It also discusses xDSL, cable, fiber, fixed-wireless, and satellite access network alternatives." "Moreover, this forward-looking reference presents the scope, potential applications, operational concept, architecture, and protocol stack of higher-layer technologies that aim to provide convergence between multiple in-home and access networks. The book introduces the concept of the residential gateway (RG) as a single point of network convergence, and explores important considerations for future digital-smart networked homes."--BOOK JACKET. Dynamic and Robust Streaming in and between Connected Consumer-Electronic Devices addresses a subject that is becoming more important over the years. On the one hand the arrival of home networks is imminent, and on the other hand we notice that chips integrate more and more functionality. The home network interconnects the Consumer Electronic (CE) devices in the home, and the individual CE-devices incorporate the chips to realize a ubiquitous streaming of video streams over this network. This book provides a comprehensive overview of the challenges that face us. The book shows that there are many similarities between traditional networking and networks in the chip. However, there are some different operational conditions that lead to original solutions. Dynamic and Robust Streaming in and between Connected Consumer-Electronic Devices focuses on the robustness aspects of the chosen technologies in the area of video streaming. Management of resources such as memory, bandwidth, CPU cycles, bus–cycles is an aspect that is prominent in many of the sections.

This is a highly anticipated examination of the popular film and fiction consumed by Britons in the 1920s and 1930s. Departing from a prevailing emphasis on popular culture as escapist, Christine Grandy offers a fresh perspective by noting the enduring importance of class and gender divisions in the narratives read and watched by the working and middle classes between the wars. This compelling study ties contemporary concerns about ex-soldiers, profiteers, and working and voting women to the heroes, villains and love-interests that dominated a range of films and novels. This book further considers the state's role in shaping the content of popular narratives through censorship. An important and highly readable work for scholars and students interested in cultural and social history, as well as media and film studies, this book is sure to shift our understanding of the role of mass culture in the 1920s and 1930s.

Issues around the policing of public order and political expression are as topical today as in the past, and are likely to remain so in the future.Janet Clark explores the origins of the National Council for Civil Liberties (the precursor to Liberty) that emerged in 1934 in protest at the policing of political extremes. The book deals with police attempts to discredit the NCCL and the use of intelligence to perpetuate a view of the organisation as a front for the Communist Party. It also examines the state and police responses to this organised criticism of police powers. This book is essential reading for students and lecturers studying British social history, the development of civil liberties and of policing in Britain, as well as anyone interested in this enduring topic. Included is a foreword by Clive Emsley, Emeritus Professor in History at the Open University, and widely regarded as the doyen of police history. "Public interest is no less exercised in the twenty-first century by civil liberties, police powers and the policing of public order than it was in the 1930s, or indeed a century earlier. The National Council for Civil Liberties (the precursor to civil rights organization Liberty) emerged in 1934 in protest at the policing of political expression. Historians have written extensively about public order, political extremism and the authorities and subversion in the interwar period but hitherto missing from this discourse is the account of the NCCL's role. Janet Clark explores the origins of the NCCL, its political orientation, and the political and personal agendas of its supporters. She argues that changing forms of political expression and divisive party politics played a noteworthy role in the momentum for a civil liberties pressure group. At the same time, the narrative deals with police attempts to discredit the NCCL and the use of surveillance and intelligence in perpetuating a view of the organisation as a front for the communist party. Distinctly, it examines the response of the state to this organised criticism of police methods and to the emergence of a civil rights movement. A concise account of the development of civil liberties in Britain, this book is essential reading for students and lecturers in the study of British social history, the historical development of civil liberties and of policing in Britain as well as anyone interested in this enduring topic. Included is a foreword by Clive Emsley, Emeritus Professor in History at the Open University, and widely regarded as the doyen of police history." --Back cover.
