""Gastroesophageal cancers are the most common form of cancer incidents, and the second most common cause of death among cancer patients. In 2000, it was estimated that over one million new cases of gastroesophageal cancers were diagnosed worldwide, and over 900,000 individuals died from the disease.Using a multi-disciplinary approach, Esophageal Cancer: Principles and Practice addresses the complexities encountered in the understanding and management of esophageal cancers. Written by the worlds leading experts in surgery, medical oncology, radiation oncology, gastroenterology, pathology, radi

The second edition of this very successful book documents the latest progress in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of esophageal cancer and includes additional sections covering novel targeted therapeutic approaches, immunotherapy and palliative and nutritional support for patients. Furthermore, the sections covering epidemiology, molecular biology, pathology, staging and radiologic and endoscopic assessments have been thoroughly updated and expanded. The principles of surgical resection, radiation therapy and systemic therapy are reviewed and attention is paid to the multidisciplinary approaches to the management of early stage cervical, thoracic, distal and junctional tumors. Updated information is also provided on the treatment of metastatic and recurrent disease as well as approaches that may impact future care, such as chemoprevention. Esophageal Cancer: Prevention, Diagnosis and Therapy will assist specialists from various disciplines, including surgery, radiation therapy, gastroenterology, medical oncology and palliative medicine, in delivering optimal, up-to-date care to the benefit of patients.

Atlas of Minimally Invasive Surgery in Esophageal Carcinoma provides both an easy-to-follow procedural manual on the laparoscopic techniques for esophageal carcinoma and a comprehensive survey of the field of surgery on esophageal carcinoma. The following procedures are presented, using detailed anatomical photographs and step-by-step descriptions:Laparoscopic Trans-hiatal esophagectomy, Laparoscopic Trans-hiatal Resection for Distal and Gastro-Esophageal Junction Cancer: The Operative Technique, Trans-thoracic esophagectomy with 2 field nodal dissection, Trans-thoracic esophagectomy in the prone position. Throughout the book, the authors emphasise the similarities of the principles and steps between open and laparoscopic surgery, which significantly simplifies the conversion from one practice to the other. The accompanying films of these procedures on the Springer Extras website further enhances understanding of the surgical steps involved. This book also includes a description of anesthesia techniques, a guide to the use of staplers in laparoscopic surgery, a comparison of the energy sources available for laparoscopic surgery and a look forward to the increasing prevalence of robotic surgery for these procedures. A comprehensive and authoritative work on minimally invasive surgery in esophageal carcinoma, this book will prove essential reading for oncosurgeons, thoracoscopic surgeons and laparoscopic surgeons who will be performing these procedures.

Endoscopic Therapy is emerging as the preferred therapy for early neoplasia in Barrett's Esophagus. This volume provides the key decision making factors in determining endoscopic therapy for an individual patient. All current techniques and complications of ET are provided including, photodynamic therapy (PDT), APC, multipolar electrocoagulation (MPEC), RF, ER, and cryotherapy. Each technique includes "how to highlights", high quality color endoscopic images, line drawings and diagrams. Endoscopic imaging modalities to detect dysplasia, decision making in the clinical arena and cost-effectiveness of ablation are some of the additional topics discussed in this highly practical volume. Written by experts in the field of endoscopic therapy, this text educates GI practitioners and researchers about this under-utilized approach to the treatment of Barrett’s Esophagus.

Squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus has a lower incidence than other gastrointestinal tract cancer; however, there are many difficult issued related to the choice of appropriate therapy for these patients. In recent years, the use of multimodal treatment has greatly improved the prognosis of patients affected by this disease but several aspects of the oncological and surgical management are still controversial. This book aims to give a homogeneous approach to esophageal cancer treatment, based on the author’s lifetime experience in conjunction with exhaustive review of recent literature. In each chapter surgeons and oncologists will find appropriate tools for correct management of the diagnosis and therapy of this difficult disease. The book analyzes all the aspects of staging and treatment, such as modern diagnostic and staging techniques (MRI or PET-CT), endoscopic treatment of early cancer, new minimally invasive and open surgical techniques, and combined treatment. In addition, there are chapters dedicated to the postoperative course of these patients, as well as their quality of life, with indications for the correct follow-up and treatment of relapses.
