Urbain Le Verrier, successeur de François Arago à l'Observatoire de Paris, a également droit à sa biographie par James Lequeux. Difficile d'imaginer hommes aussi dissemblables. Autant Arago, un vrai romantique, était extraverti et généreux, autant Le Verrier ne pouvait que travailler seul et avait des rapports difficiles avec les autres. Mais c'était un magnifique savant. Il a découvert Neptune par le calcul, « du bout de sa plume », et accompli une œuvre immense dont avaient rêvé bien d'autres sans pouvoir la réaliser : la théorie complète du mouvement des planètes dans le Système solaire. Il a réorganisé l'astronomie française, dans la douleur il est vrai, et mis en place un service météorologique international très efficace, ancêtre de Météo France. Personnage fascinant, Le Verrier a traversé son époque au milieu des haines et des controverses ; cependant, son œuvre a constamment été admirée, même de ses pires ennemis, et en a fait l'astronome le plus célèbre du milieu du XIXe siècle.

Crossing Cultures brings together scholars in the field of reception and translation studies to chart the individual and institutional agencies that determined the reception of Anglophone authors in the Dutch and Belgian literary fields in the course of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth century.The essays offer a variety of angles from which nineteenth-century literary dynamics in the Low Countries can be studied.
