Drawing on largely local sources, including local gazetteers and literati inscriptions for religious sites, this book offers a comprehensive examination of what it means to be 'local' during the Southern Song, Yuan and Ming dynasties in Ji'an prefecture (Jiangxi). It argues that 'belonging locally' was important to Ji'an literati throughout this period. How they achieved that, however, changed significantly. Southern Song and Yuan literati wrote about religious sites from within their local communities, but their early Ming counterparts wrote about local temples from their posts at the capital, seeking to transform local sites from a distance. By the late Ming, temples had been superseded by other sites of local activism, including community compacts, lineage prefaces, and community covenants.

Gui de Chauliac (1300-1368) gilt als der wichtigste Mittler zwischen der Medizin des Mittelalters und der Medizin der Neuzeit. Diese Rolle erwuchs Gui als einem umfassend informierten Arzt und Gelehrten und als einem didaktisch geschickten, systematisierenden Autor. Sein Werk, die »Chirurgia magna«, ein Kompendium zur Chirurgie, 1363 auf Latein verfaßt und im Anschluß in zahlreiche Sprachen übersetzt, stellte bis Ende des 17. Jahrhunderts eines der wichtigsten medizin-didaktischen Werke dar. Mit der Edition der »Anathomie«, des ersten Traktats der »Grande Chirurgie« des Gui de Chauliac der Handschrift Montpellier Bibliothèque de la Faculté de Médecine n° H 184 [2. Drittel 15. Jahrhundert] wird zum ersten Mal dieser Teil der bekanntesten französischen Übersetzung ediert. Unter Beachtung des medizin-historischen Hintergrundes und unter Einbeziehung der Sprachen des gesamten mentalitätsgeschichtlichen Raumes, in den sich der Text bettet, erfolgt eine Untersuchung des gemein- und des fachsprachlichen Wortschatzes. Die Untersuchungsergebnisse erbringen zahlreiche frühe Belege von Wörtern und Bedeutungen der medizinischen Terminologie, die die Leistungen des Mittelalters im sprachschöpferischen und im medizinisch-fachlichen Bereich erhellen; sie erlauben Einblicke in den Zustand der französischen medizinischen Fachsprache im 13., 14. und 15. Jahrhundert. This is the first scholarly edition of the »Anathomie«, which is the first tractate of Gui de Chauliac's (1300-1368) »Grande Chirurgie« in the French translation found in manuscript H 184 of Montpellier's Bibliothèque de la Faculté de Médecine dating from the 2nd third of the 15th century. It includes an introduction, a lexicographic study of the text, and a glossary. The aim of the lexicographic study is the integration of the ordinary-language and specialized (medical) vocabulary and its meanings into the history of the vocabulary of French. The »Grande Chirurgie« is of major significance as a source of knowledge on medieval French medical terminology.
