Abstract

This book argues that economic activity in the public sphere now underwrites private corporations, and rejects rigid adherence to traditional economic theories that no longer apply. Adam Smith's widely used "merchant's model" assumes that most investment is private, when in fact research demonstrates that public investment in the workforce through education and training far outweighs the private sector, and does not account for the growing presence of consensual pricing, the diversification of modern businesses, or the increasing internal authoritarianism of globalizing companies. With de facto public support for these adaptations undermining the universally presumed economic model, private corporations are able to increase their profits while misrepresenting the investment of their own global labor forces. This book suggests an "economy of laws" solution that balances the needed degree of central investment planning with the continuation of our pluralist economy of largely autonomous firms, principally by extending the full rights of citizens into the workplace itself.

Abstract

Food and agriculture have been subject to heavy-handed government interventions throughout much of history and across the globe, both in developing and in developed countries. Today, more than half a trillion US dollars are spent by some governments to support farmers, while other governments impose regulations and taxes that hurt farmers. Some policies, such as price regulations and tariffs, distribute income but reduce total welfare by introducing economic distortions. Other policies, such as public investments in research, food standards, or land reforms, may increase total welfare, but these policies come also with distributional effects. These distributional effects influence the preferences of interest groups and in turn influence policy decisions. Political considerations are therefore crucial to understand how agricultural and food policies are determined, to identify the constraints within which welfare-enhancing reforms are possible (or not), and finally to understand how coalitions can be created to stimulate growth and reduce poverty. .

Abstract

Beer has played a pivotal role in history, from the transition to an agarian lifestyle in ancient Mesopotamia to bankrolling Britain's imperialist conquests. Beeronomics tells the story of beer through economics, the innovations it brought, and how its strategic taxation and regulation helped shape the world.

Abstract

The two volume set, LNCS 10613 and 10614, constitutes the proceedings of then 26th International Conference on Artificial Neural Networks, ICANN 2017, held in Alghero, Italy, in September 2017. The 128 full papers included in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from 270 submissions. They were organized in topical sections named: From Perception to Action; From Neurons to Networks; Brain Imaging; Recurrent Neural Networks; Neuromorphic Hardware; Brain Topology and Dynamics; Neural Networks Meet Natural and Environmental Sciences; Convolutional Neural Networks; Games and Strategy; Representation and Classification; Clustering; Learning from Data Streams and Time Series; Image Processing and Medical Applications; Advances in Machine Learning. There are 63 short paper abstracts that are included in the back matter of the volume.

Abstract

"Electricity grids are facing significant challenges with new energy sources starting to be integrated into grids on a large scale. Distributed generation, changes in load use, and smart grid operation have each caused transformations in grid design. This monograph revisits optimal grid design problems in view of these ongoing transformations in distribution systems. The monograph describes how optimization techniques can be used to plan for a flexible electricity grid that can operate under growing uncertainty. It highlights the trends in grid design to deal effectively with future problems of security of supply. Formulations of key optimization problems in grid design are also provided together with the required modelling of load behavior. Solution challenges for the key problems are identified and the corresponding stochastic framework for chronological simulation is advanced. The book concludes with a discussion on the developments in decision support tools for planning the distribution grid of the future. Distribution grids of the future provides a succinct overview of the techniques and challenges facing the future of electricity distribution grids. Students, researchers and practitioners working on all aspects of electric energy systems will find this an incisive overview of the near-future challenges they face."--

Abstract

This volume analyses the political economy dynamics of food system transformation from an interdisciplinary perspective. Drawing on empirical data from a wide range of countries, the book touches on issues as varied as repurposing agricultural subsidies, biotechnology innovations, red meat consumption, and sugar-sweetened beverage taxes.
