Habermas und Derrida gelten als Antipoden der Gegenwartsphilosophie. Sie teilen jedoch zentrale Grundüberzeugungen. Beiden gilt es für unser Handeln und Denken als konstitutiv, daß wir ebenso sprechende wie soziale Wesen sind. Sprachlichkeit und Sozialität stellen für Habermas wie für Derrida irreduzible Dimensionen unseres Weltverhältnisses dar. Die Studie erläutert klar und verständlich, wie die beiden Denker diesen Ausgangspunkt im Rückgriff auf das Konzept der Normativität entfalten. Die Unterschiedlichkeit der von Habermas und Derrida entwickelten Modelle elementarer Vergesellschaftung ist mit der Differenz zwischen »Verständigung« und »Versprechen« genau bezeichnet. Im Gegensatz zu Adorno hat Habermas kein Interesse mehr daran, sich mit der Metaphysik im Augenblick ihres Sturzes solidarisch zu erklären. Daher behauptet er explizit, ohne »metaphysische Rückendeckung« zu philosophieren und macht dies auch theoriestrategisch deutlich. Die Studie untersucht zunächst die Strategie der Metaphysikkritik bei Habermas, um anschließend die Folgen dieses Vorgehens zu analysieren. Dabei kommt sie zu dem Schluss, dass Habermas eine Naturalisierungsstrategie einschlägt, deren Folgen auf die Konzeption der Diskursethik bisher nicht berücksichtigt worden sind. Dies hat zur Konsequenz, dass Habermas wichtige Aspekte seiner eigenen Ethik unterminiert und damit gerade jener Form von Naturalismus Vorschub leistet, die er eigentlich kritisieren wollte. Estudo teórico, de natureza comparativo-contrastante, abordando a lógica do planejamento estratégico no setor social e da saúde à luz da teoria do agir comunicativo de Jürgen Habermas. Na verdade, trata-se de uma 'crítica da crítica', na medida em que são problematizados os enfoques metodológicos tomados, até o momento, como referencial teórico alternativo ao planejamento normativo. A partir da teoria da ação habermasiana, o autor consegue indicações importantes para uma (re)leitura da teoria organizacional, na perspectiva de uma abordagem comunicativa entre todos os atores envolvidos nas organizações de saúde.

Innovative Catholicism and the Human Condition gives an anthropological account of a progressive religious movement in the Roman Catholic Church that is attempting to reconcile religious conviction and reason, and, ergo, modify the human condition. Investigation is given to a representative group of this movement, "Innovative Catholics," who are endeavouring to maintain the momentum for change which began in the 1960s and 1970s. They now find themselves caught between traditional notions of religion and a secularised society, while trying to reconcile these polarising forces to find a pathway forward. While ethnographic fieldwork for this research was conducted in Australia, this movement is to be found across the Western world. The research is framed by the question posed by Jürgen Habermas, who asks whether the democratic constitutional state is able to renew itself, and recognises a benefit in learning from religion. Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, subsequently Pope Benedict XVI, responds by asserting the need for a common ethical basis and limits on reason. This latter position, however, remains problematic for Innovative Catholics who are conscious of history and culture. The research explores how Innovative Catholics, who in taking the middle position, inform this dialectic on secularization through their ideas and practices about the human condition.
