Abstract

Optimal growth theory studies the problem of efficient resource allocation over time, a fundamental concern of economic research. Since the 1970s, the techniques of nonlinear dynamical systems have become a vital tool in optimal growth theory, illuminating dynamics and demonstrating the possibility of endogenous economic fluctuations. Kazuo Nishimura's seminal contributions on business cycles, chaotic equilibria and indeterminacy have been central to this development, transforming our understanding of economic growth, cycles, and the relationship between them. The subjects of Kazuo's analysis remain of fundamental importance to modern economic theory. This book collects his major contributions in a single volume. Kazuo Nishimura has been recognized for his contributions to economic theory on many occasions, being elected fellow of the Econometric Society and serving as an editor of several major journals.

Abstract

Institutions are a key determinant for growth. I am very happy to have pursued my research at a very good and stimulating institution, namely at the institute for Empirical Research in Economics (lEW). My special thanks go to my thes- supervisor, Josef Zweimueller. With great enthusiasm, he pointed me towards interesting research subjects. It was a very fruitful collaboration, which allowed me to start quickly my dissertation. Josef Falkinger, my co-advisor, was always an excellent discussant - not only in economics - and I profited from his useful com ments on earlier versions of this dissertation. Daron Acemoglu, Philippe Aghion, Marios Angeletos, Giuseppe Bertola, Oded Galor, Omer Moav, and Gilles Saint- Paul provided very valuable comments and suggestions to topics related to this dissertation. I gratefully acknowledge the support and numerous discussions with my colleagues, especially with Zava Aydemir, Men-Andri Benz, Johannes B- swanger, Markus Knell, Volker Grossmann, Urs Meister, Manuel Oechslin, and Niels Zilkens. Furthermore, my research also profited much from the interplay be tween teaching and research, as it was a very satisfactory task to guide ambitious students to macroeconomic problems. Finally, I want to thank my parents. Marcel and Rosemarie Foellmi-Kuster, for their great support. As entrepreneurs, they provided me, early on, with a critical view on economic problems and puzzles. Jede Forschungsarbeit profitiert ungemein von einem anregenden Umfeld. Ich hatte das Gliick, am Institut fiir Empirische Wirtschaftsforschung (lEW) solche vi Preface idealen Bedingungen vorzufinden.

Abstract

Business Education in Emerging Market Economies discusses the impact of business education on emerging markets and explores curricular innovation, pedagogical approaches, and strategic alliances in the context of industrializing economies. Emerging markets consist of eighty percent of the world's population and some 75% of its trade growth in the foreseeable future according to the U.S. Department of Commerce. The potential economic growth of emerging markets has prompted a need to understand the dynamics of these markets, their business institutions, and their educational systems. Many universities in the United States of America, for example, have responded to the demand of their students and business constituents to educate them about these exciting opportunities and lurking threats in these industrializing economies. This book contains multiple chapters describing curricular innovations and course development designed to educate American students about emerging markets. The pressures of globalization and the recent economic reforms that swept across emerging, developing, and transitioning, economies have had a positive impact on the demand for business education and business knowledge from the developed and industrialized countries. As a result, many methods were developed to transfer know-how from the developed markets including learning through imitation, using western style pedagogical approaches, attending universities in industrialized countries, learning through experience and practice, and using information technology. Aside from chapters on the aforementioned topics, this book also provides country- and region-specific insight into China, Russia, India, Ukraine, Latin America, Brazil, Argentina, South Africa, Arab Middle East and North Africa, and Vietnam. The conclusion we reach is that business and management education in emerging markets is fast changing the way in which these markets operate and are perceived - business educators are catalysts for greater economic integration.

Abstract

Economic growth of a country depends on its industries. The focus of modern growth theory is basically macroeconomics, although neoclassical models use competitive markets and the optimization behavior of households and firms in general equilibrium framework. The emphasis here is on industry growth, where the microfoundations of industry are analyzed in terms of economic efficiency. The various linkages which link firm growth with the industry growth are discerned here under various market structures both competitive and monopolistic. The role of information in facilitating market signals and allowing the adoption of new processes has been especially emphasized in this volume. Many issues of market failure and the suboptimality of competitive equilibria are due to incomplete and imperfect information structures and we need a comprehensive theory of information structures underlying the process of industry growth and its dynamics. This book will be of interest to economists studying economic and industry growth and innovation.

Abstract

In this book the theory of social production is systematically formulated in terms and concepts of classical political economy and neo-classical economics. In this way the subject becomes accessible not only to professional researchers in the areas of theory of production and economic growth, but also to the educated reader who is curious about the principles behind the functioning of a national economy. The book can be considered as an introduction for students with a background in physics, chemistry and engineering, who wish to specialize in economics. The author explains how the growth of production is connected with achievements in technological consumption of labour and energy. The theory allows one to analyse the past and the present of the social production system and to build scripts of the future progress. The book could be interesting for energy specialists who are  engaged in planning and analysing production and consumption of energy carriers and determining energy policy, and for economists who want to know how energy and technology are affecting economic growth.

Abstract

The importance of entrepreneurship for achieving economic growth in contemporary economies is widely recognized, both by policy makers and economists. However, empirical evidence linking entrepreneurship to economic growth is scarce. Empirical Analysis of Entrepreneurship and Economic Growth investigates the relation between entrepreneurship and economic growth at the country and regional level. The work contributes to our understanding of how entrepreneurship may affect economic growth. Among others, it is investigated whether the impact of entrepreneurship on economic growth varies with the development level of an economy, with the sector of economic activity, and with the quantity and quality of entrepreneurial supply. Empirical evidence is provided showing that the impact is dependent upon all these three aspects.

Abstract

Recent developments in economics have gone from the recognition of the importance of innovation for growth and the exploration of innovation mechanisms to the incorporation of the results of the previous research into economic models. An important lesson to be drawn from all this research is that a purely macro-based analysis of growth is not enough. The various mechanisms of innovation creation and diffusion, the importance of agent heterogeneity, of market selection processes, of the internal organization of the firm and of organizational routines, and the obsolescence and the consequent emergence of new types of capital goods are a few examples of micro-economic phenomena that contribute decisively to macro-economic development. The papers in this volume approach those issues from a Schumpeterian point of view and tackle issues like the growing importance of knowledge and human capital; increasing returns and path dependence; the role of variety in economic growth; competition and industry evolution.

Abstract

This book provides an account of work in the Schumpeterian and evolutionary tradition of industrial dynamics and the evolution of industries. It is shown that over time industries evolve and change their structure. In this dynamic process change is affected and sometimes constraint by many factors: knowledge and technologies, the capabilities and incentives of actors, new products and processes, and institutions. All these elements and their relations drive innovative activities and affect economic performance in an industry. Investigations into these complex phenomena show a deep interdependence between empirical work delivering a rich account of regularities and stylized facts in the structure of industries and their change, and theoretical analyses ranging from appreciate theorizing to formal modeling.

Abstract

Over the past decade, the transport industry has been the target of growing criticism over its role in the pollution of the environment, while the advocates of free trade stress the importance of transport in enhancing economic growth and consequently living standards. These starkly contrasting viewpoints have created a dilemma for politicians and business people alike. In order to address this challenge, the first part of this book provides an empirical analysis of the relationship between transport and economic growth, or more specifically, whether the "decoupling" of transport and economic growth is possible. Focusing on growth-oriented transport policy, the second part of this book provides details on the user preferences of logistic managers concerning the characteristics of transport infrastructure and services.
