Abstract

Nanotechnology has been the subject of extensive ‘assessment hype,’ unlike any previous field of research and development. A multiplicity of stakeholders have started to analyze the implications of nanotechnology: Technology assessment institutions around the world, non-governmental organizations, think tanks, re-insurance companies, and academics from science and technology studies and applied ethics have turned their attention to this growing field’s implications. In the course of these assessment efforts, a social phenomenon has emerged – a phenomenon the editors define as assessment regime.Despite the variety of organizations, methods, and actors involved in the evaluation and regulation of emerging nanotechnologies, the assessment activities comply with an overarching scientific and political imperative: Innovations are only welcome if they are assessed against the criteria of safety, sustainability, desirability, and acceptability. So far, such deliberations and reflections have played only a subordinate role. This book argues that with the rise of the nanotechnology assessment regime, however, things have changed dramatically: Situated at the crossroads of democratizing science and technology, good governance, and the quest for sustainable innovations, the assessment regime has become constitutive for technological development. The contributions in this book explore and critically analyse nanotechnology’s assessment regime: To what extent is it constitutive for technology in general, for nanotechnology in particular? What social conditions render the regime a phenomenon sui generis? And what are its implications for science and society?

Abstract

This is the first handbook to provide an overview of the major research perspectives in cross–cultural management and to look at how they can be applied to real–world situations. The volume is distinctive in bringing together perspectives previously considered independently, placing the work of management experts alongside contributions from leading cross–cultural psychologists, sociologists and economists. The editors have consciously selected cutting–edge contributors from a variety of countries. The structure of the handbook reflects a systems feedback model of management. Beginning with the influence of national cultures on managerial and employee behavior, the volume goes on to cover strategy, structure, human resources, motivation, rewards and leadership behavior, interpersonal processes, and corporate culture and values. This allows the reader to see the issues within a dynamic and systematic context. The relationships between the chapters are elucidated by commentary from the editors. This authoritative volume will be welcomed by managers, researchers and students seeking insight into cross–cultural issues and problems in and across organisations.

Abstract

Recently, neuroscientists have presented new research which has a direct impact on many areas of Social Psychology. In this innovative volume, the author explores the nexus of Social Psychology and Neuroscience with relation to: -The Human "Self" -The Social Nature of the Mind -Socialization and Language Acquisition -Role-Taking/Theory of Mind -Consciousness -Intersubjectivity -Balanced Social Constructionism -Human Agency -The Effect of Emotion on Rational Decision-Making This groundbreaking work integrates areas of George Herbert Mead's social behaviorism with current neuroscience. The chapters in this volume demonstrate how current work on mirror neurons supports the basic tenets of the American pragmatists' focus on the priority of motor behavior.

Abstract

Place pedagogy change is a work of creative experimentation in which we explore the ways in which pedagogies of place can enable the relational learning of connections between people, places and communities. In adding the element of place to the dynamic relations between teacher, learner, and knowledge, we articulate a pedagogy of ethical uncertainty. Ethical refers to our mutual responsibilities to others and to the more-than-human world, and uncertainty to the unpredictability inherent in our relationship with this world. In Place pedagogy change, we examine the nature of such innovative pedagogies as they emerged across the curriculum from early childhood to school and community education, and in teacher education. The book will provide a useful text for teachers and teacher eductors wishing to address questions of place and sustainability in educational research and practice.
