The monumental Sint-Pieterskerk is located in the center of Leuven. It was built in the fifteenth century under the leadership of Sulpitius van Vorst and Matheus de Layens, among others. Guilds, university faculties and elite families enlivened the building with dazzling religious ceremonies, music and lavish artwork. A powerful chapter of clergy and university professors watched over the patrimony. During the French occupation, the church was closed and the furniture sold publicly. The building was mutilated several times by war - with the loss of works of art and archives - time and again it rose like a phoenix from its ashes. In 2019, the 35-year restoration campaign was completed. Visitors will once again discover the beautiful interior with its wonderful light. Centuries-old works of art, including the famous Last Supper by Dieric Bouts, now shine in an attractive museum setting. In this lavishly illustrated book, seventeen authors present a brand-new overview of the building history, restorations, unique art heritage and musical past of this church, the jewel of the Brabant Gothic style. Gilden, universitaire faculteiten en elitefamilies brachten het gebouw tot leven met schitterende religieuze plechtigheden, muziek en overdadige kunstwerken. Een machtig kapittel van geestelijken en universiteitsprofessoren waakte over het patrimonium. Tijdens de Franse bezetting werd de kerk gesloten en het meubilair openbaar verkocht. Werd het gebouw verschillende malen door oorlogsgeweld verminkt - met het verlies van kunstwerken en archieven - steeds opnieuw herrees het als een feniks uit zijn as. In 2019 werd de 35 jaar durende restauratiecampagne afgerond. Bezoekers ontdekken opnieuw het prachtige interieur met zijn heerlijke lichtinval. Eeuwenoude kunstwerken, waaronder het beroemde Laatste Avondmaal van Dieric Bouts, schitteren nu in een aantrekkelijke museale opstelling. Zeventien auteurs brengen in dit rijkelijk geïllustreerde boek een gloednieuw overzicht van de bouwgeschiedenis, de restauraties, het unieke kunstpatrimonium en het muziekverleden van deze kerk, parel van de Brabantse gotiek
