Overhangende luifels, uithangborden, uitstallingen op de stoep en sobere interieurs waren ooit typerend voor de winkels in Amsterdam. Vanaf het midden van de zestiende eeuw hebben de puien, etalages en interieurs van de winkels echter grote veranderingen ondergaan. Clé Lesger beschrijft deze in samenhang met ontwikkelingen in bouwkunde en architectuur, de opkomst van warenhuizen en supermarkten en veranderingen in verlichting en glasfabricage. Ook de samenstelling, koopkracht en smaak van het winkelend publiek spelen een rol. De vele afbeeldingen maken de veranderingen zichtbaar. Daarnaast besteedt Lesger veel aandacht aan de locatie van winkels. Winkels zijn niet willekeurig verdeeld over de stad, maar verbonden met de structuur van het stratennetwerk die is ontstaan tijdens stadsuitbreidingen en andere grote ingrepen in het stedelijk landschap. Pas toen er winkelcentra werden gebouwd in buitenwijken, werd het patroon van winkelstraten doorbroken. In de vooroorlogse delen van Amsterdam is het oude bewinkelingspatroon wel blijven bestaan.
