Although rapid progress has been made in meteorology in Japan over the past fifty years, no up-to-date monograph covering the new data and current explanations has been published in any language except Japanese. It is the aim of the present book to fill this gap in the literature. The principal topics covered include the general geographical setting, the annual march of the seasons, dynamic and synoptic aspects, the winter monsoon and other important seasonal phenomena, typhoons, the heat and water balance, and wind systems. Sections are also devoted to climatic modification, regional climatic characteristics and climatic divisions, the past cliamte and secular changes in recent times. Although this book is essentially a specialized one, it is intended to read not only by specialists of climatology and meteorology but also by workers in other fields such as geography and ecology. Also, by giving certain emphasis to the relationships of wether to human life and environmental studies, it is hoped to attract a broader audience.
