Das in der Universitätsbibliothek Gießen als Codex 660 aufbewahrte Evangeliar entstand im späten 10. Jahrhundert in einem Kölner Skriptorium, aus dem auch andere Prachthandschriften in Mailand, Paris, Darmstadt, Köln, Naumur und Stuttgart erhalten sind. Diese werden in der Forschung als "Malerische Gruppe" zusammengefasst und bilden den Höhepunkt ottonischer Buchmalerei in Köln und weit darüber hinaus.Der vorliegende Band untersucht das von der Forschung bisher kaum beachtete Gießener Evangeliar erstmals umfassend und ordnet es sowohl kunsthistorisch als auch historisch ein. Somit gelingt eine Neubewertung der wahrscheinlich im Kloster St. Pantaleon in Köln zur Zeit von Kaiserin Theophanu innerhalb weniger Jahre entstandenen "Malerischen Gruppe", die deutlich früher als in der älteren Forschung vermutet datiert. Sie steht zeitlich auf einer Stufe mit der Buchmalerei der Trierer Egbert-Werkstatt sowie der Reichenauer Buchmalerei des 10. Jahrhunderts. Der internationale Autorenkreis verbindet in diesem Band vielfältige Methoden zu neuen Ergebnissen über die ottonische Buchmalerei, die gerade in Köln mit ihren expressiven Formen, impressionistischem Farbauftrag und ihrem Erfindungsreichtum eine besondere Modernität aufweist.Mit Beiträgen von Olaf Schneider, Klaus Gereon Beuckers, Ursula Prinz, Doris Oltrogge, Robert Fuchs, Vivien Bienert, Matthias Schrör, Jens Lieven, Joshua O'Driscoll, Beate Braun-Niehr, Fabricio Crivello, Elisabeth Luger-Hesse, Eliza Garisson, Jochen Hermann Vennebusch und Markus Späth. Biographische Informationen Klaus Gereon Beuckers hat den Lehrstuhl für Kunstgeschichte an der Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel inne.
