Abstract

Globally there is a burden of approximately 1, 60,000 new cases of cleft lip and palate every year, yet there is no single comprehensive source on this problem. This surgical atlas fills the gap in the knowledge of appropriately handling cleft lip and palate cases. This pictorial resource has been compiled and edited by an expert who operates one of the highest cleft lip and palate correction programs in the world and has performed more than 34,000 surgeries, restoring function to numerous patients across the globe. It covers all variants and types of cleft lip and palate defects, including both primary cases as well as in previously operated cases. It starts with an in-depth elaboration on anatomy, physiology, and pathology of the (normal) palate and cleft palate, moving towards, classification and identification of defects with the help of clear flow charts and simple algorithms enabling better diagnosis and decision making. With over 1500 high definition images and hand-drawn sketches, this atlas provides a detailed description of diagnosis, problems and the management of each type of defect. The underlying objective of such surgeries is to best restore the good function of the palate and enable better speech production, which is highlighted amply in each chapter. This atlas is a valuable resource for all plastic surgeons, paediatric surgeons, maxillofacial surgeons, ENT surgeons and other medical professionals involved in cleft lip and palate defect surgeries.

Abstract

This atlas offers precise, step-by-step descriptions of robotic surgical techniques in the fields of otolaryngology and head and neck surgery, with the aim of providing surgeons with a comprehensive guide. The coverage encompasses all current indications and the full range of robotic surgical approaches, including transoral, transaxillary, transmaxillary, and transcervical. Key clinical and technical issues and important aspects of surgical anatomy are highlighted, and advice is provided on ancillary topics such as postoperative care and robotic reconstructive surgery. Robotic surgery has proved a significant addition to the armamentarium of tools in otolaryngology and head and neck surgery. It is now used in many centers as the workhorse for resection of oropharyngeal and laryngeal tumors, thyroid surgery, and base of tongue resection in patients with obstructive sleep apnea. The da Vinci robotic system, with its three-dimensional vision system, is also excellent for parapharyngeal, nasopharyngeal, and skull base resections. This superbly illustrated book, with accompanying online videos, will be ideal for residents in otolaryngology–head and neck surgery and skull base surgery who are working in a robotic cadaver lab and for specialists seeking to further improve their dissection techniques.

Abstract

Utilizing the most current evidence, this practical book is the first publication of its kind to focus exclusively on the clinical and laboratory evaluation and therapy of thyroid nodules, including advances in evaluation and controversies in management. Opening with chapters presenting the epidemiology, history, laboratory and clinical evaluation of thyroid nodules, the use of radioactive isotope ultrasound and CT scanning in diagnosis is then described. The interpretation of thyroid cytology following fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsies and the use of molecular markers are discussed in detail, as is the controversial use of thyroxine therapy. Following a presentation of the common and minimally invasive surgical approaches to thyroid nodules, chapters on multinodal goiters, incidentalomas and thyroid nodules in children round out the presentation. Written and edited by leading US and international thyroidologists, Thyroid Nodules is a useful, state-of-the-art text for endocrinologists, surgeons, and primary care physicians.

Abstract

Salivary Endoscopy is a rapidly emerging field that has revolutionized the management of non-neoplastic diseases of the salivary gland, such as salivary stones, sialadenitis, and salivary duct stenosis. With the emergence of endoscopic access to the salivary ductal system, several procedural and technical innovations have emerged that have now permitted gland preservation surgery for these pathologies. As more centers and physicians are adopting this rapidly emerging and evolving procedure, there is a need for source of literature that provides current concepts and detailed technical descriptions of the procedures that involve gland preservation surgery.  This text intends to capture the current concepts among experts and in literature regarding the management of non-neoplastic salivary gland diseases. The book also focuses on steps of surgical management and technical pearls while providing detailed information on the decision-making process when emcompassing the diversity of clinical presentation, intra-operative decision-making and post op care. Gland Preservation Surgery provides high quality illustrations, clinical and operative images, and videos that serve as an online resource to salivary gland surgeons and endoscopists with varying experience and expertise.   .
