External fixation in Orthopedic traumatology is a textbook that focuses on the use of external fixation in the acute management of patients with serious orthopaedic injuries. The book highlights the indications for external fixation and provides an evidenced based guide to both the specialist orthopedic surgeon and the trainee. The manuscript is organised in 14 chapters covering the indications and surgical techniques for pelvis, lower limb and upper limb injuries, including detailed illustrations and clinical photographs that will enable the reader to rapidly visualise the structure of the construct and to plan the surgery accordingly. More general topics such as damage control orthopedics, the biomechanics of external fixation and medico-legal considerations surrounding the injured patients are also included to provide an overall picture of the Orthopedic trauma patient. The Combined experience of the editors and authors, their involvement in a number of external fixation system designs and their international reputation in the field contribute to making this textbook an essential tool that should be available to all orthopaedic surgeons dealing with injured patients.

The scope and importance of hip fractures is almost incomprehensible. With a world wide incidence of close to 2 million cases per year, theses fractures pose a daunting challenge to our ability to affect and treat this epidemic. Basics for operative treatment of proximal and distal femur fractures: Clear surgical indication Short planning and preparation < 24 h Full weight bearing osteosynthesis Early mobilisation and physiotherapy In comprehensive form the book presents the usage of a meanwhile well installed implant (DMS) for osteosynthesis technique in the peritrochanteric region. The „double dynamic" stabilization (sliding tongue principle and angle adapted contoured fit) means a state of the art fracture treatment procedure. It is a convincing alternative to achieve a biological osteosynthesis at the femur. The system includes an infinitely adjustable, flexible angle, dynamic plate with a tubular distal part.

In recent years biocompatible polymers for injuries and wounds have seen advances and innovations that have outpaced the growing field's literature. In this book, Dr. Jan W. Gooch, a National Research Council Research Associateship Award recipient, reveals how innovative polymer technology can be applied to the common combat and trauma wounds associated with damaged soft tissue and bleeding. The scope of his investigation, which is tailored to biomaterial scientists, polymer scientists, and biomedical engineers, spans four distinct devices for wounds: • Liquid and particulate barrier dressings for soft tissue wounds • Sutureless tissue adhesives • Antibacterial nanoemulsions • One-hand operated and automatic tourniquets for the battlefield.
