“Reizen is dé manier om de wereld te kennen en levenslessen op te doen,” schrijft Gloria Steinem. Vaak onderweg zijn was ze al gewend sinds haar kindertijd. Het hele gezin reisde namelijk mee met vader Steinem, die antiekhandelaar was. De jonge Gloria verlangde eigenlijk naar een échte thuis, maar ze zou later zelf ook vaak 'on the road' zijn. Na haar studies aan de universiteit reisde ze twee jaar lang door India, waar ze geconfronteerd werd met zichzelf: “I had wanted to escape my travelling childhood, yet I was travelling and making the discovery that ordinary people are smart, smart people are ordinary, decisions are best made by the people affected by them, and human beings have an almost infinite capacity for adapting to the expectations around us”. Nadien keerde ze terug naar de VS en begon haar journalistieke werk. Ze bracht o.m. verslag uit van de 'Civil Rights March' van Martin Luther King, maar ze vond dat de stemmen van zwarte vrouwen amper aan bod kwamen. Zo groeide stilaan het besef dat vrouwen 'outsiders' zijn waar niet naar geluisterd wordt. Dit werd het begin van haar jarenlange activisme. Ze richtte het tijdschrift 'Ms.' op en zette haar eerste stappen als spreker, waarvoor ze langs vele universiteiten reisde. Ze engageerde zich op politiek vlak en voerde campagne om gelijke kansen en de politieke participatie van vrouwen op de agenda te zetten.Vandaag heeft Gloria vrienden over de hele wereld ; de vele ontmoetingen met bijzondere mensen en situaties vormden de belangrijkste aanleiding voor het schrijven van dit boek.
