This study observed the frequency with which laboratory rats (Rattus norvegicus) entered polyvinylchloride (PVC) conduits placed in their cages to provide environmental enrichment. The study found that use of PVC conduits by Norway rats varied with subjects' strain, age, sex, and housing condition. Adult male Long-Evans rats rarely entered PVC conduits unless housed in pairs, in which case the lighter (presumably subordinate) pair member frequently used the conduit, possibly to avoid contact with his dominant partner. Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats entered PVC conduits only during the illuminated portion of the day-night cycle and only if housed on shelves exposed to direct overhead illumination. Both juvenile rats and female rats made extensive use of PVC conduits throughout the day:night cycle. This paper discusses implications of these findings for determining how best to enrich environments in which laboratory rodents are maintained.

In a previous study, rats reared in isolation from weaning exhibited normal prepulse inhibition (PPI) before puberty, whilst after puberty (6-8 weeks post weaning) isolation reared rats exhibited deficits in PPI. The developmental timing of the onset of this isolation effect appears to be critical because similar isolation of adult rats has no effect on PPI. The present study examined the time and duration of the period or 'window' of isolation necessary to induce these behavioral changes. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were isolated for either only the first 2 weeks from weaning, only the first 4 weeks from weaning, only weeks 3 and 4, or continuously from weaning (ISO group), and compared with rats reared in normal social conditions (SOC group). Eight weeks after weaning, we compared acoustic and airpuff startle reactivity, acoustic and light PPI; and acoustic and airpuff startle habituation across the groups. There were no significant changes in any of the measures in the groups exposed to 2- or 4-week periods of isolation. In the ISO and SOC groups, acoustic or airpuff startle reactivity was similar, while acoustic PPI was reduced significantly in the ISO group. Airpuff startle habituation was increased significantly in the ISO group compared to SOC controls and there was a similar trend with acoustic startle habituation. These results indicate that only animals isolated for more than 4 weeks after weaning display deficits in PPI, and provide evidence that there is no critical pre-pubertal developmental window for inducing PPI deficits, rather, continuous post-weaning isolation is needed to induce the PPI deficit effect. Elevated levels of novelty seeking are often seen during adolescence. Recent studies using a conditioned place preference (CPP) paradigm have shown that novelty may be rewarding for adult rats. The present study explored the impact of age, sex, and isolation stress on novelty seeking and novelty reward by assessing novel object-induced CPP in adolescent and adult male and female Sprague-Dawley rats housed either socially or in isolation. Responding to the novel objects during conditioning was higher in adolescent animals than adults, and was suppressed by social isolation only in adulthood, particularly among males. Novel object CPP was strong among adolescent males, whereas only socially isolated adult males demonstrated preference for the compartment paired with the novel objects. This age difference was not evident in females, with both adolescent and adult group-housed females, but not their isolated counterparts, showing novel-object place conditioning. These dissociations between novelty-directed behaviors during conditioning and novelty reward in the CPP paradigm support the suggestion that mechanisms underlying novelty seeking are separable from those involved in the rewarding effects of novelty. High levels of novelty seeking demonstrated by adolescents do not necessarily predict high rewarding properties of novelty, with the latter also being influenced by environmental and gender-related factors. The body weight gain, and food and water intake of the rats were measured. During weeks 3 or 4, home cage behaviour, urinary cortiosterone/ creatinine ratios (CO/CR), and muscle strength on an inclined plane, were measured. Enzyme activities and glycogen content were measured in tissue samples from m. triceps brachii taken after euthanization at the end of the study. There were no significant differences between groups for food and water intake, but PH rats weighed 14% less than SI rats after 4 weeks, and PH rats also had a more diverse behavioural pattern than SI rats. PH rats had significantly higher oxidative capacity (28% more citrate synthase (CS)) and greater glycogen content (28%) in their muscle samples than SI rats. The PH rats performed significantly better on the inclined plane, both in the muscle strength test (mean angle 75 +/- 0.5degrees for PH rats and 69 +/- 0.4degrees for SI rats) and the endurance strength test (mean time 233 +/- 22 s for PH rats and 73 +/- 14 s for SI rats). There was a negative correlation between body weight and results on the inclined plane for the PH rats. There were no significant differences between housing types with respect to CO/CR ratios. In conclusion, the large pen represents an environment that stimulates physical activity and more varied behaviour, which should be beneficial for the welfare of the animal The cage systems commonly used for housing laboratory rats often result in sedentary and overweight animals, as a consequence of restricted opportunities for physical activity combined with ad libitum feeding. This can have implications both for animal well-being and for the experimental outcome. Physical activity has several known positive effects on health and lifespan, and physical fitness might therefore be incorporated into the animal welfare concept. The aim of this study was to investigate if and how pen housing affects the physical activity and fitness of rats. Thirty-two juvenile male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to two different housing systems for a 4-week period. Sixteen rats were kept individually in standard Makrolon type III cages (42 X 26 X 18 cm) furnished with black plastic tubes (singly-housed, SI). The remaining rats were kept in groups of eight, housed in large floor pens (150 X 210 cm), which were furnished with various objects to increase environmental complexity (pen-housed, PH).

There is global interest in using insects as food and feed. However, before insects can be recommended as a type of nourishment to augment more traditional and widely accepted sources of food and feed, it is essential that in-depth research involving a variety of subjects is carried out. We can learn from societies in which insects are still a component of the local diet which species are preferred and how they are prepared for human consumption. We need information on the chemical composition of edible insects and have to make sure we know what kinds of micro-organisms and pathogens they contain. Legal questions in relation to the sale and breeding of certain species need to be addressed, and medicinal aspects of edible insects and their products should be examined. How best to market selected species and make them palatable to a clientele that more than often rejects the idea of insects in the diet are further important aspects in need of study. This book deals with these questions in 19 articles written by experts from at least 20 different countries that represent a range of disciplines. As such, it is a useful tome for a wide range of food researchers.
