This dissertation by Armin Spreco focuses on the development of methods for detecting and predicting influenza epidemics. It emphasizes the importance of early detection to manage healthcare resources effectively during such outbreaks. The work involves preparatory studies assessing the potential of eHealth and pre-diagnostic data sources for influenza surveillance. It also reviews existing detection and prediction algorithms, followed by the development of a nowcasting method. This method aims to provide real-time surveillance by predicting the start, peak timing, and intensity of epidemics using local data. The dissertation targets healthcare professionals and researchers interested in epidemiology and public health.

This reference guide, developed by the World Health Organization, details the Malaria Surveillance Assessment Toolkit. It is intended for use by health professionals and organizations involved in malaria surveillance and control. The guide provides a comprehensive framework for assessing surveillance systems, including a step-by-step approach from assessment initiation to data collection, analysis, and dissemination of findings. It emphasizes data quality and management, offering tools and methodologies for conducting surveys and reviews at multiple levels of the health system. The guide is designed to enhance the effectiveness of malaria surveillance and inform action plans to address gaps in malaria control efforts.

This publication by the World Health Organization (WHO) outlines the target product profile for a diagnostic test aimed at the surveillance of lymphatic filariasis, a mosquito-borne parasitic infection prevalent in 72 countries. The document addresses the need for improved diagnostic tools to monitor and prevent the resurgence of the disease, particularly after mass drug administration programs have ceased. It highlights the limitations of current diagnostic methods and the necessity for new tests to detect recent infections. The intended audience includes public health officials, researchers, and policymakers involved in neglected tropical diseases. The goal is to support global efforts to eliminate lymphatic filariasis as a public health problem.

This publication by the World Health Organization provides comprehensive guidance on tuberculosis data generation and use, focusing on surveillance. It addresses the principles and scope of TB data management, defining core indicators and data items necessary for effective surveillance. It also explores digital surveillance methods and data quality assurance. The guidance is intended for national health programs and agencies responsible for TB surveillance, offering practical examples from various countries. The work supports the WHO End TB Strategy, aiming to improve global TB control and reporting.

This publication by the World Health Organization focuses on the integrated sentinel surveillance of influenza and SARS-CoV-2. It examines the development of the Global Influenza Surveillance and Response System (GISRS) Plus, emphasizing the need for effective respiratory virus surveillance. The book highlights the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on influenza surveillance systems and the progress made in integrating SARS-CoV-2 data. It provides updated guidance on surveillance practices, shares best practices from various countries, and outlines a roadmap for enhancing GISRS towards GISRS Plus. The intended audience includes public health professionals, epidemiologists, and policymakers involved in disease surveillance and response.

Bioterrorism is not a new threat, but in an increasingly interconnected world, the potential for catastrophic outcomes is greater today than ever. The medical and public health communities are establishing biosurveillance systems designed to proactively monitor populations for possible disease outbreaks as a first line of defense. The ideal biosurveillance system should identify trends not visible to individual physicians and clinicians in near-real time. Many of these systems use statistical algorithms to look for anomalies and to trigger epidemiologic investigation, quantification, localization and outbreak management. This book discusses the design and evaluation of statistical methods for effective biosurveillance for readers with minimal statistical training. Weaving public health and statistics together, it presents basic and more advanced methods, with a focus on empirically demonstrating added value. Although the emphasis is on epidemiologic and syndromic surveillance, the statistical methods can be applied to a broad class of public health surveillance problems.
