Abstract

This volume provides a comprehensive review of causes of voice changes in athletes and coaches, the clinical presentation of laryngeal dysfunction, and its different treatment modalities. The authors discuss the predisposing factors of these changes including the use of anabolic steroids, and highlight the pathophysiology of voice disorders in sports-occupational voice users who very often need to vocalize outdoors and/or while performing strenuous exercise over noise. Chapters cover the literature on vocal health risk factors in the sports industry; the common phonatory disturbances in athletes, fitness instructors and coaches; sports-related laryngeal trauma; the impact of sports-related musculoskeletal injuries on phonation; vocal fold dysfunction in athletes, as well as the adverse effect of anabolic steroids intake on occupational voice users. An updated, brief review of the anatomy and physiology of phonation, with guidelines on the work-up and treatment of common laryngeal pathologies in patients with voice disorders is included. A well-focused description of the interplay between musculoskeletal injuries, hyperkinetic body behavior, laryngeal hyperfunction and voice disorders in athletes and coaches is also provided, and the prevalence and pathophysiology of exercise-induced laryngeal dysfunction is discussed in depth. The text concludes with a thorough examination of laryngeal trauma in athletes, clinical presentations, diagnostic work-up and management. Abstract

This book examines agentic approaches by which teacher educators navigate a highly regulated environment. It investigates how teacher educators are responding to such regulation by employing approaches such as exploratory and case study research designs. This book analyzes qualitative and quantitative data to understand the diverse, innovative and critical perspectives of teacher educators who are guided by state and federal level initiatives to enhance the quality Initial Teacher Education (ITE) programs. Prominent educational theoretical perspectives are also used in this book to inform data analysis and to illuminate the empirically based findings. This book showcases research-informed insights for the global education community from leading researchers from across a number of teacher education institutions, locally and otherwise. By adopting an ‘activist’ approach, this book positions teacher educators’ research and contribution to the field as agentive and pro-active.

Abstract

This book addressed teachers’ necessity to be able to respond to the new needs and demands caused by an ever-evolving educational system, as recognized in the national and international policy and research literature. The book proposes an analysis of the features that shape the journey of the teacher profession and professionalism, a journey which needs to be collaborative, agentive and dialogical: • Collaborative in changing the personal and professional teacher development from an individual and solitude process toward a joint discovery with mutual enrichment and shared directionality; • Agentive in the ability to activate internal and external resources for an individual, productive and communicative transformation; • Dialogical in the ability to enrich the personal narrative with the voices of others and opening spaces for dialogue and listening. The seven chapters are structured in a way that gives flow and pace to the unfolding story of the developing teacher identity and is informed by a whole range of research and literature. This book serves as a reference point for teacher-students, in-service teachers and teacher educators who are interested in their professional development and looking for new perspectives. It also offers some helpful insights for administrators who need to make ICT decisions on course development in teacher education.
