Die Reihe Die Griechischen Christlichen Schriftsteller der ersten Jahrhunderte (GCS) veröffentlicht seit 1897 (zuerst in Leipzig, dann in Berlin) die Ergebnisse des Akademieprojektes Griechische Christliche Schriftsteller, begonnen in der damaligen Königlich Preußischen Akademie der Wissenschaften, fortgeführt in der Berlin-Brandenburgischen Akademie der Wissenschaften. Sie bietet in großen kritischen Ausgaben mit historisch orientierenden Einleitungen und Registern diejenigen Werke, die ursprünglich im griechischsprachigen Teil des antiken kaiserzeitlichen Christentums entstanden sind und nicht von den anderen großen Editionsreihen herausgegeben werden. Für die ersten drei Jahrhunderte wird dabei Vollständigkeit angestrebt.

"The Demonic in the Political Thought of Eusebius of Caesarea" explores how Eusebius of Caesarea's ideas about demons interacted with and helped to shape his thought on other topics, particularly political topics. Hazel Johannessen builds on and complements recent work on early Christian and early modern demonology. Eusebius' political thought has long drawn the attention of scholars who have identified in some of his works the foundations of later Byzantine theories of kingship. However, Eusebius' political thought has not previously been examined in the light of his views on demons. Moreover, despite frequent references to demons throughout many of Eusebius' works, there has been no comprehensive study of Eusebius' views on demons, until now, as expressed throughout a range of his works. The originality of this study lies both in an initial examination of Eusebius' views on demons and their place in his cosmology, and in the application of the insights derived from this to consideration of his political thought. As a result of this new perspective, Johannessen challenges scholars' traditional characterization of Eusebius as a triumphal optimist. Instead, she draws attention to his concerns about a continuing demonic threat, capable of disrupting humankind's salvation, and presents Eusebius as a more cautious figure than the one familiar to late antique scholarship. - back of book

One of the books most central to late-antique religious life was the four-gospel codex, containing the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. A common feature in such manuscripts was a marginal cross-referencing system known as the Canon Tables. This reading aid was invented in the early fourth century by Eusebius of Caesarea and represented a milestone achievement both in the history of the book and in the scholarly study of the fourfold gospel. In this work, Matthew R. Crawford provides the first book-length treatment of the origins and use of the Canon Tables apparatus in any language. Part one begins by defining the Canon Tables as a paratextual device that orders the textual content of the fourfold gospel. It then considers the relation of the system to the prior work of Ammonius of Alexandria and the hermeneutical implications of reading a four-gospel codex equipped with the marginal apparatus. Part two transitions to the reception of the paratext in subsequent centuries by highlighting four case studies from different cultural and theological traditions, from Augustine of Hippo, who used the Canon Tables to develop the first ever theory of gospel composition, to a Syriac translator in the fifth century, to later monastic scholars in Ireland between the seventh and ninth centuries. Finally, from the eighth century onwards, Armenian commentators used the artistic adornment of the Canon Tables as a basis for contemplative meditation. These four case studies represent four different modes of using the Canon Tables as a paratext and illustrate the potential inherent in the Eusebian apparatus for engaging with the fourfold gospel in a variety of ways, from the philological to the theological to the visual.

Eusebius' 'Ecclesiastical History', written in the early fourth century, continues to serve as our primary gateway to a crucial three hundred year period: the rise of early Christianity under the Roman Empire. "This is the first English translation of the last two theological works of Eusebius of Caesarea, Against Marcellus and On Ecclesiastical Theology. The first text was composed after the deposition of Marcellus of Ancyra in 336 to justify the action of the council fathers in ordering the deposition on the grounds of heresy, contending that Marcellus was "Sabellian" (or modalist) on the Trinity and a follower of Paul of Samosata (hence adoptionist) in Christology. Relying heavily upon extensive quotations from a treatise Marcellus wrote against Asterius the Sophist, this text provides important information about ecclesiastical politics in the period before and just after the Council of Nicea, and endeavors to demonstrate Marcellus's erroneous interpretation of several key biblical passages that had been under discussion since before the council. In doing so, Eusebius criticizes Marcellus's inadequate account of the distinction between the persons of the Trinity, eschatology, and the C hurch's teaching about the divine and human identities of Christ. On Ecclesiastical Theology, composed circa 338/339 just before Eusebius's death, and perhaps in response to the amnesty for deposed bishops enacted by Constantius after the death of Constantine in 337 and the possibility of Marcellus's return to his see, continues to lay out the criticisms initially put forward in Against Marcellus, again utilizing quotations from Marcellus's book against Asterius. However, we see in this text a much more systematic explanation of Eusebius's objections to the various elements of Marcellus's theology and what he sees as the proper orthodox articulation of those elements. Long overlooked for statements at odds with later orthodoxy, even written off as heretical because allegedly "semi-Arian," recent scholarship has demonstrated the tremendous influence these texts had on the Greek theological tradition in the fourth century, especially on the orthodox understanding of the Trinity. In addit ion to their influence, they are some of the few complete texts that we have from Greek theologians in the period immediately folllowing the Council of Nicea in 325, thus filling a gap in the materials available for research and teaching in this critical phase of theological development"--Book jacket.

Origenes und Eusebius stehen am Anfang der christlichen Psalmenkommentierung. Ihre einleitenden Texte zu den Psalmen behandeln technische und formale Fragen, wie die Einteilung des Psalters oder die Autorschaft der Psalmen, aber auch inhaltliche, wie die Bedeutung der Psalmen für das christliche Selbstverständnis. Die vergleichsweise kurzen Texte haben eine lange Rezeptionsgeschichte. Sie boten nicht nur späteren patristischen Autoren Ausgangs- und Kritikpunkte, sondern sie wurden bis in die Neuzeit hinein immer wieder in die Prologsammlungen von Psalmenkatenen aufgenommen. Auf der breiten Basis dieser Prologsammlungen werden die Texte in einer neuen, kritischen Edition mit Übersetzung und Anmerkungen vorgelegt. Sowohl für Origenes als auch für Eusebius sind damit erstmals alle bekannten Prologtexte zu den Psalmen in einer einzigen zuverlässigen Ausgabe vereint, wobei frühere Falschzuweisungen behoben werden konnten. Zwei themenverwandte Essays und farbige Abbildungen ergänzen die Sammlung.
