""The care provided to women in pain unfortunately often adds to the suffering rather than relieving it. This clinical resource describes instead the evidence-based approach to women's pain that offers optimum relief as well as a compassionate response Congratulations to Yvonne for creation of this resource, which will serve as an excellent tool for clinicians dedicated to pain relief for women. "". -Betty Ferrell , PhD, MA, FAAN, FPCN, CHPN. Professor and Research Scientist. City of Hope, Duarte, California. Recent research studies have indicated that there is a difference between the pain ex

Adjuvant Analgesics provides practical information on the use of adjuvant analgesics such as antidepressants and anticonvulsants, for management of various types of pain such as chronic, postoperative, cancer-related, neuropathic and fibromyalgia pain. Chapters cover a basic introduction to adjuvant analgesics for pain control, appropriate clinical applications of the various drug classes in the management of common pain problems, and on drug-drug interactions between adjuvant analgesics and traditional analgesics.

Migraine treatment improved considerably with the advent of the 'triptans' in the 1990s. While the drugs used previously for headache treatment had efficacy, some compounds had bothersome side effects and their overuse could lead to severe complications. In the early days of the triptans, it was widely presumed that migraine was no longer a treatment problem. However, it has gradually been recognized that a significant proportion of patients are not responsive to triptans or do nottolerate them. It is now clear that, even with effective treatment, patients with frequent migraine attacks are no

Sodium channels confer excitability on neurons in nociceptive pathways and exhibit neuronal tissue specific and injury regulated expression. This volume provides recent insights into the control of expression, functioning and membrane trafficking of nervous system sodium channels and reviews why sodium channel sub-types are potentially important drug targets in the treatment of pain. The roles of sodium channels in dental and visceral pain are also addressed. The emerging role of sodium channel Nav1.3 in neuropathic states is another important theme. Authors from the pharmaceutical industry discuss pharmacological approaches to the drug targeting of sodium channels, and in particular Nav1.8, exclusively expressed in nociceptive neurons. The final chapter highlights the functional diversity of sodium channels in part provided by post-transcriptional processing and the insights into sodium channel function that are being provided by tissue specific and inducible gene knock-out technology.
