Laparoscopic surgery, also called minimal access surgery, has revolutionized the field of surgery over the past few years. It has gained worldwide popularity and acceptance by surgeons and patients alike. Minimal scarring, less pain, and shorter hospital stay are the main reasons behind the global appeal of this novel technique. There has been a tremendous improvement in the technique, as well as in the instruments. The technique has passed through the stages of simple laparoscopic surgery to advanced levels, where more complicated procedures are being successfully attempted. The recent introduction of robotic surgery is also gaining popularity, in additional to single port laparoscopic surgery (SILS), which can be scarless surgery. Most of the surgical procedures, which were considered contraindication for the laparoscopic approach, have eventually become the most common and acceptable indications today. This book is intended to provide an overview of the most common procedures performed laparoscopically, as well as some recent advancements in the field.

Over the last decades an enormous amount of technical advances was achieved in the field of laparoscopy. Many surgeons with surgical, urological, or gynaecological background have contributed to the improvement of this surgical approach which today has an important and fixed place in the daily routine. It is therefore comprehensible to compose a book entitled laparoscopy serving as a reference book for all three disciplines. Experts of each field have written informative chapters which give practical information about certain procedures, indication of surgery, complications and postoperative outcome. Wherever necessary, the appropriate chapter is illustrated by drawings or photographs. This book is advisable for both beginner and advanced surgeon and should find its place in the libraries of all specialties - surgery, urology, and gynecology.

Laparoscopic surgery developed as the most element change ever in the history of surgery. The approach of this method is no more a late headway. The history goes back three decades now when appendectomy was initially performed laparoscopically in 1983. It was then polished by not very many specialists, and there was a moderate move of the method from traditional open surgery to laparoscopic surgery. Hesitance to take in an absolutely new method, absence of facilities, and appropriate training were main considerations ruining its direction. After an underlying hindered period came a sudden ascent in the worldwide preoccupation of the consideration toward this novel strategy. There was an aggregate move from open to laparoscopic surgery in a large portion of the focuses with an expanding rundown of operations being performed laparoscopically. This book is intended to bring forward the very many advancements in the field of laparoscopic surgery. There are many valuable contributions from eminent laparoscopic surgeons ranging from diagnostic to therapeutic procedures performed by this technique. I hope it will benefit the trainee surgeons as well as the experienced alike. Suggestions and positive criticism are more than welcome.

Approximately 100 years ago, after the first diagnostic laparoscopy and subsequent developments, the adventure began with laparoscopic appendectomy and cholecystectomy and reached a point where any surgical procedure could be performed easily. Today, many endoscopic surgical procedures have an important role not only in general surgery, but also in the daily practice of many surgical branches. This vertiginous development and change of speed make rapid replacement of the visual and printed materials necessary for training in this area. This book is prepared by surgeons who are very successful in their field.
