Peintre, sculpteur, anatomiste ou ingénieur, Léonard est un homme universel qui a exploré tous les champs du savoir. De sa formation à Florence dans l'atelier de Verrocchio jusqu'à sa mort à la cour du roi François Ier, commanditaires (Ludovic le More, Julien de Médicis, Isabelle d'Este), savants (Pacioli, Di Giogio Martini, Della Torre) et compagnons (Salaï, melzi) sont convoqués pour retracer le parcours artistique, scientifique et humain de ce "héros" de la Renaissance italienne. Au niveau de son oeuvre, sa peinture est analysée au fil de cinq approches thématiques : invention, anatomie, expression, mouvement, perspective. L'inventaire des oeuvres de Léonard sont brièvement exposés afin de situer dans quel pays se trouve les oeuvres.
