Die Überlieferung der deutschen Sprache zeugt seit ihren Anfängen im 8. Jahrhundert von einem intensiven und anhaltenden Kontakt mit den Sprachen in ihrer Nachbarschaft. Umgekehrt hat auch das Deutsche im Laufe seiner Geschichte mehr oder weniger starke Spuren in seinen Nachbarsprachen hinterlassen. Der vorliegende Band, der auf einer Kieler Ringvorlesung von 2008 beruht, beschreibt diese wechselseitigen Sprachkontakte und deren Auswirkungen auf die beteiligten Sprachen und Varietäten aus der Perspektive der germanistischen, romanistischen, slawistischen, frisistischen und anglistischen Philologien. Aus dieser fachgrenzenüberschreitenden Zusammenschau ergibt sich eine Art "deutsche Sprachgeschichte von außen", zugleich auch eine Art Handbuch der mitteleuropäischen Sprachkontakte.
