This first monograph of the Rotterdam-based firm KAAN Architecten provides a comprehensive overview of their most important projects to date. KAAN Architecten, who run satellite offices also in Paris and Sao Paulo, gained wide renown through complex public commissions that go beyond traditional notions of typology and method. The range includes government offices, museums, urban development projects, as well as buildings for health care, education and research. The 15 designs documented in this book are presented as different characters with varying physiognomies, but which belong to the same family and feature similar traits, hence also the title of the book. KAAN Architecten invite us to view the projects with different eyes and to trace their evolution.Divided into five chapters that reveal various aspects of the works, KAAN Architecten-Portraits shows their works as individual pieces of a complex puzzle: a fragment of a picture, a quote from an article, a detail. The essays by Pierre Chabard and Ruud Brouwers interweave rich visual material: photographs, visualisations, plans and construction drawings.

Since 1890, the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp has been home to a rich collection spanning over seven centuries of art history; from the Flemish Primitives to Expressionists. More recently, the Museum has been enriched by another treasure by the Dutch architectural firm KAAN Architecten. Their restoration work and new design combine a contemporary allure with the glorious but somewhat neglected beauty of the 19th-century landmark. Completely concealed within the existing museum, the new extension underlines the strength of the original building and its role as heritage within the rapidly changing city. These contrasting yet dialoguing spaces coexist as two different worlds in one building. The renovation and extension bring together the past, the present and the future in a layered ensemble of time, architecture, history and art.00This publication documents the result of an extensive renovation, richly illustrated with original drawings, archive material and unique images of the new KMSKA.

The Open Call in Flanders is more than just another architecture competition: any governmental agency or public institution can choose to work with an Open Call for any given construction project. Since its invention by the first Flemish Government Architect bOb Van Reeth in 2000, more than 700 assignments have been published in this procedure, resulting in almost 350 completed public architectural and infrastructural projects so far. This volume compiles 70 projects, from all over Flanders—from its west coast to the Dutch border in the east—to illustrate the astounding quality of these projects. They prove that public architecture can be daring, thought-provoking, cooperative, and well-done at the same time. The book takes an extensive look at how this procedure works, how it is received by architects, politicians, and clients—and ultimately, at the outstanding public architecture in Flanders as an example for other countries to study closely.Including buildings by 51N4E, Bovenbouw Architectuur, Dierendonckblancke, Zaha Hadid, KAAN, Maxwan, Hideyuki Nakayama, Ney & Partner, noAarchitecten, OFFICE Kersten Geers David Van Severen, RCR Arquitectes, Robbrecht en Daem, Sergison Bates, Eduardo Souto de Moura, Xaveer de Geyter, among others
