D'une exemplaire économie de moyens semblent découler une invention narrative et une esthétique toujours plus assurée dans sa discrétion même. Tenter d'appréhender les spécificités de cette oeuvre, dont l'évidence est aussi admirable que déroutante, se présente ainsi comme une nécessité. Pour ce faire, Les Variations Hong Sang-soo, décliné en deux volumes, se propose de réunir les contributions de critiques ou d'universitaires et de donner la parole à certains des proches collaborateurs du cinéaste, ou à ceux qui ont oeuvré à la diffusion de ses films en France et en Corée du Sud. Cette double approche doit permettre de dessiner les contours d'une poétique propre à cet artiste et de cerner la singularité de sa méthode, les spécificités de son style ou encore ses audaces dramaturgiques, tout en précisant le rôle de ceux qui accompagnent son processus de création.
