Dépeignant avec acuité les affects et les atermoiements de ses "congénères" aux prises avec les affres de la passion amoureuse, ses films se sont constamment démarqués au sein de la production cinématographique sud-coréenne par une forme aisément identifiable et le choix de thématiques récurrentes. Son oeuvre, qui s'enrichit de nouveaux opus à un rythme toujours plus soutenu, n'en témoigne pas moins d'une évolution artistique certaine, que viennent souligner de multiples récompenses et rétrospectives dans les festivals et cinémathèques du monde entier. Tenter d'appréhender les spécificités de cette oeuvre, dont l'évidence est aussi admirable que déroutante, se présente ainsi comme une nécessité.
