This volume brings together papers that offer conceptual analyses, highlight issues, propose solutions, and discuss practices regarding privacy and data protection. The first section of the book provides an overview of developments in data protection in different parts of the world. The second section focuses on one of the most captivating innovations of the data protection package: how to forget, and the right to be forgotten in a digital world. The third section presents studies on a recurring, and still important and much disputed, theme of the Computers, Privacy and Data Protection (CPDP) conferences : the surveillance, control and steering of individuals and groups of people and the increasing number of performing tools (data mining, profiling, convergence) to achieve those objectives. This part is illustrated by examples from the domain of law enforcement and smart surveillance. The book concludes with five chapters that advance our understanding of the changing nature of privacy (concerns) and data protection

The comprehensive modernisation of the administration demands reliable concepts and efficient products on the one hand and innovative ideas and the motivation of numerous people in quite different roles and positions on the other. In order for the public sector to be able to make use of the enormous creative potential of modern technologies, it is important to intensify efforts to combine all available forces and to exploit new synergies. "E-Government Guide Germany: Strategies, Solutions and Efficiency" provides a broad, discerning picture of the activities and achievements to date as well as the challenges to come. More than fifty experts from the public sector (federal, provinces and communal level), and from industry and science, examine e-government as a complex challenge to be mastered through the close co-operation of those involved. All the authors in this edition have many years of experience in their special fields of developing and applying e-government. Based on the principle 'by professionals for professionals', this handbook not only offers insights into what has already been achieved in the field, but also states what still has to be done. It defines specific tasks, creating a solid, common basis for decision-makers and implementers

This book is produced by the Members of the European Committee of the Regions in close collaboration with Europe's cities and regions. The book is all about pioneering cities and regions - or reviewing the content of the book from activities perspective: about regional innovation ecosystems. In recent years it has increasingly become apparent that only through sharing knowledge and working in partnership it is possible to create truly competitive and sustainable economies meeting the needs of the 21st century. In order to achieve this, the European Union can and must work with and for our citizens. For this to happen we need to achieve a change in mindset. This publication therefore seeks to stimulate bench-learning between regions and cities, sparking new ideas and fundamentally stirring economic development. Presenting some of the most inspiring projects across the EU, this book offers readers an opportunity to understand and explore how Europe's cities and regions are breaking new ground in regional development. The European Committee of the Regions is the EU's Assembly of 350 regional and local representatives from all 28 Member States, representing over 507 million Europeans. This book is an essential part of the process of implementing our political priorities for 2015-2020 and giving Europe's citizens the fresh start they need. In order to overcome its current challenges, Europe must establish a culture of co-creation and break its boundaries by moving towards entrepreneurial discovery, open innovation, experimentation and action.
