Depression, once a subfield of neurosis, has become the most diagnosed mental disorder in the world. Why and how has depression become such a topical illness and what does it tell us about changing ideas of the individual and society? Alain Ehrenberg investigates the history of depression and depressive symptoms across twentieth-century psychiatry, showing that identifying depression is far more difficult than a simple diagnostic distinction between normal and pathological sadness - the one constant in the history of depression is its changing definition. Drawing on the accumulated knowledge of a lifetime devoted to the study of the individual in modern democratic society, Ehrenberg shows that the phenomenon of modern depression is not a construction of the pharmaceutical industry but a pathology arising from inadequacy in a social context where success is attributed to, and expected of, the autonomous individual. In so doing, he provides both a novel and convincing description of the illness that clarifies the intertwining relationship between its diagnostic history and changes in social norms and values. The first book to offer both a global sociological view of contemporary depression and a detailed description of psychiatric reasoning and its transformation - from the invention of electroshock therapy to mass consumption of Prozac - The Weariness of the Self offers a compelling exploration of depression as social fact.

Tuberculosis is one of the world's deadliest infectious diseases, killing nearly two million people every year-more now than at any other time in history. While the developed world has nearly forgotten about TB, it continues to wreak havoc across much of the globe. In this interdisciplinary study of global efforts to control TB, Christian McMillen examines the disease's remarkable staying power by offering a probing look at key locations, developments, ideas, and medical successes and failures since 1900. He explores TB and race in east Africa, in South Africa, and on Native American reservations in the first half of the twentieth century, investigates the unsuccessful search for a vaccine, uncovers the origins of drug-resistant tuberculosis in Kenya and elsewhere in the decades following World War II, and details the tragic story of the resurgence of TB in the era of HIV/AIDS. Discovering Tuberculosis explains why controlling TB has been, and continues to be, so difficult.

"Psychiatric epidemiology, like cancer, heart disease, or AIDS epidemiology, increasingly dominates the bio-politics of nations and of worldwide health campaigns like the Global Burden of Disease. Yet this is the first book-length history of psychiatric epidemiology, arguably the oldest of epidemiological disciplines, albeit the slowest to develop intellectually and institutionally. The epidemiology of mental disorders and mental health differs radically from that of other diseases and health conditions in that it studies subjective states, difficult to objectify or precisely define. Despite these obstacles, over many decades, researchers, governments, and international organizations have continually attempted to measure mental states, their distribution and presumed causes in the hope of informing public policy, clinical treatment, social reform, and population management. Since the nineteenth century, epidemiology and earlier proto-epidemiology in dissimilar contexts have served strikingly different purposes, from census counts of the "insane" to imperialist and racist psychological profiles of subaltern groups to attempts to measure diagnostic entities in an entire nation. We argue that these multiple historical paths resulted not in a uniform field based on common paradigms as was the case for cardio-vascular and cancer epidemiology, but in a plurality of psychiatric epidemiologies, driven by different intellectual questions, reformist ideals, national cultures, and social control objectives"--

This book tells the combined stories of how scientists across the 19th and 20th centuries defeated meningitis - not through flawless scientific research, but often through a series of serendipitous events, misplaced assumptions, and flawed conclusions. The result is a story of not just a vanquished disease, but how scientific accomplishment sometimes occurs where it's least expected.

"Africa has emerged as a prime arena of global health interventions that focus on particular diseases and health emergencies. These are framed increasingly in terms of international concerns about security, human rights, and humanitarian crisis. This presents a stark contrast to the 1960s and '70s, when many newly independent African governments pursued the vision of public health "for all," of comprehensive health care services directed by the state with support from foreign donors. These initiatives often failed, undermined by international politics, structural adjustment, and neoliberal policies, and by African states themselves. Yet their traces remain in contemporary expectations of and yearnings for a more robust public health. This volume explores how medical professionals and patients, government officials, and ordinary citizens approach questions of public health as they navigate contemporary landscapes of NGOs and transnational projects, faltering state services, and expanding privatization. Its contributors analyze the relations between the public and the private providers of public health, from the state to new global biopolitical formations of political institutions, markets, human populations, and health. Tensions and ambiguities animate these complex relationships, suggesting that the question of what public health actually is in Africa cannot be taken for granted.
