This book brings together Kenneth Frampton's essays from the 1960s to today which epitomize his reflections on the historical-theoretical entanglements of architecture with place, the public realm, cultural identity, urban landscape and environment, and the political question of the "predicament" of architecture in the new Millennium. The essays explore Frampton's contention that architecture's imperative is to assume a significant responsibility for the edification and stewardship of the Arendtian 'public world.' One of the most theoretically sophisticated and politically committed architectural thinkers, Frampton's work breaks emphatically with the limits and norms of much contemporary practice and restores a sense of richness and social consequence of architecture's 'unfinished project,' while offering abiding lessons not only for architecture but for social, cultural, and design criticism alike

The English architect, historian, critic and educator Kenneth Frampton received the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the latest Venice Biennale 2018. There is no architecture student that is not familiar with the book 'Modern Architecture: A Critical History (1980)' of this renowned historian, nor with his essay ?Towards a Critical Regionalism, Six Points of an Architecture of Resistance? (1983). In this last text, Frampton searched for an alternative approach towards architecture by defining the specifics of topography, climate, light and tectonics as essential to the art of building. 0This issue of OASE examines the canonical role of Kenneth Framptons concept of ?Critical Regionalism?, reaching beyond its traditional interpretation. It gathers contributions that propose a new genealogy of the text, critical re-readings and explorations by practicing architects and architecture theorists that evaluate the interest of Frampton?s ideas for contemporary architecture.

This book focuses on the first edition of Kenneth Frampton's Modern Architecture: A Critical History, published in 1980. It searches for clues and positions that will provide the reader with an unprecedented insight into the significance of Frampton's historiography of modern architecture. It explores selected themes in line with Frampton's many-faceted contribution, certain aspects of which can be noted between the lines of his ongoing criticism of the present-day architecture, which inevitably lead us to a critical understanding of the past, the modernity of architecture's contemporaneity.
The compiled chapters attempt to open a window onto the constellation of themes that allowed Frampton to hold on to his anteroom view of history even amidst the flow of time and flood of temporalities spanning 1980-2020. The book elucidates how Frampton's critical presentation of the history of modern movement architecture and the book's classificatory mode contribute to our understanding of the contemporaneity of architecture today.

The evolution of modern architecture has been inextricably entangled in issues of politics, nationalism, and the environment, creating a tension between local context and global development that is unresolved to this day. In this context, few writers have exerted as much influence on architectural theory and practice as Kenneth Frampton. In this illustrated volume, twenty-nine contributors from around the world amplify and pay tribute to his writing and thought. Intended for all those concerned with the built environment, this book offers further evidence of how this scholar, humanist, and teacher has shaped our understanding of the working reality of the architect. The premise of Modern Architecture and the Lifeworld is rooted in Frampton's understanding of how architecture must engage with both cultural and constructional imperatives; and it addresses strategies for grappling with contemporary concerns such as regional identity amidst urban globalization, and tectonic culture and landform in the construction of place. Supported by the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts.

Architectural training seems to be more difficult to organize than ever before. After May 1968, education was radically democratized, or at least that was the intention. However, the 1999 Bologna Declaration radically changed the structure of architecture schools as well. Is there any tradition left to hand down to students? What skills do they need before they can enter the job market? And how about the kind of knowledge that may not be practical, but is nevertheless necessary to fully understand the culture and history of architecture? Is the architect a critical intellectual or rather a successful entrepreneur? This issue of OASE examines European schools and teachers from the 1960s to the present day. Do educational institutes emphasize a particular architecture? What is the relationship between design and history? What is the impact of famous architects who teach? The issue concludes with three interviews about the architecture schools of today and about the challenges for the future.

"The Magus of the North" : this was the epithet which architecture critic Sigfried Giedion found for Alvar Aalto (1898-1976), the best-known Finnish architect of his generation and a major exponent of a different kind of modernism - one conceived on a more human scale. His buildings, such as the Paimio Tuberculosis Sanatorium or the legendary Villa Mairea, stand for a masterly, organic combination of volumes, materials and light. His laminated plywood chairs made him one of the most important designers of the twentieth century, while his Savoy Vase has come to be seen as the epitome of Finnish and organic design. Alvar Aalto - Second Nature draws on recent research into Aalto's oeuvre to present a comprehensive overview of his work in architecture, design and urban planning, with a special focus on his dialogue with major contemporary artists - including László Moholy-Nagy, Hans Arp, Alexander Calder and Fernand Léger - and his fascination with film, cinema and photography. The book features eleven essays by authors from various countries. The catalogue section presents numerous original drawings from the Alvar Aalto Museum and pieces of Aalto furniture from the holdings of the Vitra Design Museum. A complete list of all his buildings and projects is also included, along with several photographic essays by the artist Armin Linke showing Aalto's buildings from a contemporary perspective.
