Das Buchbeinhaltet mit der beschreibenden (deskriptiven) und der schließenden Statistik (Wahrscheinlichkeitstheorie) das Basiswissen der Statistik. Gegenüber der ersten Auflage wurden einige Neuerungen eingearbeitet. Im zweiten Kapitel "Beschreibende Statistik" wurde der Abschnitt Lage- und Streuungsparameter erweitert; u.a. wurde im Rahmen der Korrelationsanalyse zur besseren Veranschaulichung die Kovarianzanalyse vorgeschaltet. Die Fallstudien wurden ebenfalls erweitert. Im dritten Kapitel "Schließende Statistik" wurden die Grundlagen zur Wahrscheinlichkeitstheorie und die Kombinatorik noch stärker mit den sich anschließenden Verteilungsfunktionen verknüpft. Dort wurden nun die Gleich-, Dreiecks- und Exponentialverteilung aufgenommen, wodurch weitere betriebswirtschaftlich relevante Bereiche integriert werden konnten. Der Themenkomplex Schätztheorie wurde grundlegend überarbeitet und um einige bedeutende Konfidenzintervalle, so bspw. um die Methodik des Value at Risk, wünschenswerte Eigenschaften von Schätzfunktionen und Verfahren zur Konstruktion von Schätzfunktionen erweitert. Der Autor hat auch dieses Kapitel mit neuen, praxisrelevanteren Fallstudien versehen. Das Buch richtet sich an Studierende wirtschaftswissenschaftlicher Studiengänge.
