Eine modernen Standards genügende Erfassung, Dokumentation und Erforschung der materiellen Hinterlassenschaften des Steinkohlenbergbaus steckt vielerorts erst in den Anfängen. Die Publikation enthält die Beiträge einer Ende 2017 vom Montanhistorischen Dokumentationszentrum (montan.dok) am Deutschen Bergbau-Museum Bochum veranstalteten Tagung, die es sich zum Ziel gesetzt hatte, Vertreter aus verschiedenen Museen und musealen Einrichtungen zusammenzubringen, um Sammlungen und Objekte im Spannungsfeld von Musealisierung, Digitalisierung, Restaurierung und Objektforschung zu diskutieren. Die Beiträge greifen dieses breite Themenspektrum auf und loten die Möglichkeiten einer methodisch reflektierten Montangeschichte aus. Dies mit Blick auf die Objektforschung und die Nutzung objektbezogener archivalischer Quellen wie auch in Hinsicht auf die Präsentation von objektbezogener Forschung in der digitalen Welt. Das Buch richtet sich daher im engeren Sinne an Forschende auf dem Gebiet der Montan- und Technikgeschichte sowie allgemein an diejenigen, die sich mit einer materiell basierten Erinnerungskultur beschäftigen. The essays published in this volume, taken from a 2017 conference at the German Mining Museum in Bochum, examine mining heritage with regard to museumization, digitalization, restoration, and object research. At the same time, the volume reflects the diversity of mining’s historical legacy, which extends from associations to large museums of technology.

This text sharpens the readers' knowledge of swords as it traverses through a captivating 1,000 years of French and English history. The book reveals that warrior culture, with the sword as its ultimate symbol, was deeply rooted in ritual long before the introduction of gunpowder weapons transformed the battlefield. The book argues that objects have agency and that decoding their meaning involves seeing them in motion: bought, sold, exchanged, refurbished, written about, displayed, and used in ceremony. Drawing on evidence about swords in the possession of nobles and royalty, the book explores the meanings people attached to them from the contexts in which they appeared.

Bilder steuern zentral die Wahrnehmung von Kulturen. Begreift man Kultur als gesellschaftspraktische Lebensform, dann lassen sich Bildkulturen als Gesamtheit der bildlichen Repräsentationen und Bildpraktiken, als Praktiken der Inkorporation von Denken und Handeln bestimmen, durch die Wirklichkeiten visuell konstruiert und behauptet werden. Die Erforschung von Bildkulturen wirft entsprechend die Frage nach dem ›Imagineering‹ auf, dem mentalen und physischen Erzeugen von Bildern, nach Bildtechniken, Bildpraktiken und Bildagentschaften. Eine Bildkulturwissenschaft widmet sich ferner dem Umgang mit und dem Verhalten zu Bildern im Sinne eines spirituellen und profanen Kultus sowie den anthropologischen und kulturellen Verortungen von Bildern im Spannungsfeld zwischen ›ImagiNation‹ und Migration. Die Beiträge des Bandes eröffnen eine ›Bildpraxeologie‹ des Politischen und erweitern damit den Horizont der Kulturwissenschaften um geopolitische Aspekte der Bildverwendung.
