This book is concerned with a fundamentally novel approach to graph-based pattern recognition based on vector space embedding of graphs. It aims at condensing the high representational power of graphs into a computationally efficient and mathematically convenient feature vector. This volume utilizes the dissimilarity space representation originally proposed by Duin and Pekalska to embed graphs in real vector spaces. Such an embedding gives one access to all algorithms developed in the past for feature vectors, which has been the predominant representation formalism in pattern recognition and r

Following the pioneering discovery of alpha clustering and of molecular resonances, the field of nuclear clustering is today one of those domains of heavy-ion nuclear physics that faces the greatest challenges, yet also contains the greatest opportunities. After many summer schools and workshops, in particular over the last decade, the community of nuclear molecular physicists has decided to collaborate in producing a comprehensive collection of lectures and tutorial reviews covering the field. This second volume follows the successful Lect. Notes Phys. 818 (Vol.1), and comprises six extensive lectures covering the following topics: · Microscopic cluster models · Neutron halo and break-up reactions · Break-up reaction models for two- and three-cluster projectiles · Clustering effects within the di-nuclear model · Nuclear alpha-particle condensates · Clusters in nuclei: experimental perspectives By promoting new ideas and developments while retaining a pedagogical style of presentation throughout, these lectures will serve as both a reference and an advanced teaching manual for future courses and schools in the fields of nuclear physics and nuclear astrophysics.

This proceedings volume includes all the invited talks and oral presentations at the International Symposium on Clustering Aspects of Quantum Many-Body Systems, 12-14 November 2001, Kyoto, Japan. It discusses various features of clustering aspects - localization of particles in static and dynamical contexts - of nuclear and atomic systems. It also presents many recent theoretical developments in quantum few-body and many-body problems. This book will be useful to graduate students and researchers in the field of quantum many-body problems, especially to those who want to understand the system

The monograph is devoted to the relatively new and fast developing field of cluster physics. It is based on talks given at the Cluster Workshops, which were held in Pushchino in 1995 and 1996. The reports focus not only on the fundamental physical properties of clusters such as their geometric and electronic structure, as well as optical, thermal and magnetic properties, but also on a broad spectrum of their potential applications. These include nucleation and growth of small particles, fabrication of new materials with predefined properties (cluster-assembled and nanostructures). Some aspects

Atomic clusters are aggregates of atoms containing a few to several thousand atoms. Due to the small size of these pieces of matter, the properties of atomic clusters in general are different from those of the corresponding material in the macroscopic bulk phase. This monograph presents the main developments of atomic clusters and the current status of the field. The book treats different types of clusters with very different properties: clusters in which the atoms or molecules are tied by weak van der Waals interactions, metallic clusters, clusters of ionic materials, and network clusters mad
