The Res Gestae Divi Augusti, a funerary inscription recounting the deeds of Augustus, was originally displayed on two bronze pillars in Rome. While the originals have been lost, a Latin and Greek copy were found in 1555 in today’s Ankara. Augustus lays stress not only on his foreign policy successes, but also emphasizes his care of the people. He proudly recounts his building accomplishments and cites the many honors bestowed upon him.

At long last, this book provides a comprehensive study of the life and work of the 7th century monk and theologian Anastasius Sinaïta (Anastasios of Sinai). It analyzes his principal work, the Hodegos (or Viae Dux) and his other Christological writings, and also presents his sermons and his role as an apologist toward the Jews and Moslems and an exegetist of Genesis 1–3.

This book contains a new edition and English translation of the oldest commentary on Aristotle written in Arabic and preserved to this day, together with an extensive commentary. It is a compendium on the treatise De generatione et corruptione, written by the Imamite theologian and heresiographer Hasan b. Mūsā al-Nawbakhtī (fl. ca. 900). To this day, apart from the title of more than forty works and numerous fragments-taken mainly from his magnum opus, the Book of the Doctrines and Religions (Kitāb al-ārā’ wa-al-diyānāt)-only a single treatise of his, the Book of Shî’î Sects (Kitâb firaq al-shî’a), was known to us. The text sheds new light in several ways: firstly, on the the Arabic philosophical tradition, since it was composed during the obscure period between al-Kindī and al-Fārābī (roughly, the 2nd half of the 9th c.); secondly, on the Greek tradition, since the author makes extensive use of Alexander’s lost commentary on De generatione; thirdly, on the formative period of shī’ism, since it helps us to reconstruct how the author borrowed from the Aristotelian tradition the tools necessary to build up a new anthropology compatible with the doctrine of the Occultation which he inaugurated at the time.

In 1888 K. Schenkl published the first critical edition of Proba’s Cento. Schenkl knew about 25 manuscripts, only eleven of which are referred to in his apparatus. Since that time about 70 new manuscripts have been discovered; this volume provides a full description of the manuscript tradition in the praefatio and demonstrates that the tradition originates from a manuscript preserved near Aachen, probably at the court of Charles the Great.

The modern sense of "Greater Khorasan" today corresponds to a territory which not only comprises the region in the east of Iran but also, beyond Iranian frontiers, a part of Afghanistan and Turkmenistan. In the past this entity was simply defined as Khorasan. In the Sassanid era Khorasan defined the "Eastern lands". In the Islamic era this term was again taken up in the same sense it previously enjoyed. The Arab sources of the first centuries all mention the eastern regions under the same toponym, Khorasan. Khorasan was the gateway used by Alexander the Great to go into Bactria and India and, inversely, that through which the Seljuks and Mongols entered Iran. In a diachronic context Khorasan was a transit zone, a passage, a crossroads, which, above all in the medieval period, saw the creation of different commercial routes leading to the north, towards India, to the west and into China. In this framework, archaeological researches will be the guiding principle which will help us to take stock of a material culture which, as its history, is very diversified. They also offer valuable elements on commercial links between the principal towns of Khorasan. This book will provide the opportunity to better know the most recent elements of the principal constitutive sites of this geographical and political entity.
