Despite growing scepticism concerning the evidentiary value of normative legal sources, scholars continue to mine the legislative acts of ecclesiastical councils for insight into political, religious, and quotidian life in Frankish Gaul. Between the reigns of Clovis and Charlemagne (AD 511-768) at least eighty councils assembled, often on royal command, to discuss issues of concern to the episcopal and clerical attendees. Their published canons were intended to communicate ecclesiastical policy in the Frankish regnum. However, scholars have paid comparatively slight attention to the institution responsible for this body of legislation. This book remedies this lacuna by delineating the functions and modus operandi of the Frankish church council as an administrative body.

Of major importance to the Anglo-Saxon church in the period c.650-c.850, church councils played a vital role in the organisation of church life, as well as functioning as a forum for the meetings of kings and bishops. This study investigates fundamental issues of organisation: How frequently did Anglo-Saxon church councils meet? Who attended? Where did they meet? By answering such questions, Cubitt reveals the prominent role of church councils within Anglo-Saxon ecclesiastical and political developments. Individual case studies of councils and their canons focus on their contribution to the reform and development of the Church, while continental comparisons provide a much wider contemporary framework. The significant political and ecclesiastical changes of the time are reflected and illuminated by this fascinating history of Anglo-Saxon church councils, which illustrates the reforming initiatives of Anglo-Saxon bishops in response to contemporary pressures, and reveals tensions between the sacred and civil power.

The Ecclesiastical History Society has devoted two meetings to the theme of 'Councils and Assemblies'; this seventh volume of Studies in Church History, covering a wide span of time, contains twenty-two papers on varying aspects of the subject. Starting in the early Middle Ages, it moves through the great medieval councils to Vatican I and II. Geographically the gatherings range from Byzantium to Cornwall, from Edinburgh to Cape Town. Some produced valuable legislation in the fields of welfare or education, others were sterile debates between irreconcilable viewpoints. Some of the papers raise issues of the first importance, others fill gaps in our knowledge. All are well worth the attention of historians.
