Boeri, Stefano --- Italië

Stefano Boeri is one of the few practices of international renown that has managed to overcome the difficulties intrinsic to the situation Italy presents for architecture studios and to make of these a virtue. His career as an architect has gone hand in hand with a commitment to teaching, criticism, publishing, politics and cultural agitation, and the projects he has tackled in these fields are numerous. To this we might add an abundant oeuvre unusually productive in terms of Italian parameters including public and private buildings, extending from apartment blocks and offices, a shopping mall and a small art centre in Milan, to more paradigmatic works like the remodelling of La Maddalena Arsenal (Sardinia), the apartment towers of the Vertical Forest in Milan and the Centre Régional de la Méditerranée in Marseille.

In May 2015, Studio Link-Arc completed the China Pavilion for Expo Milano 2015, its most prominent work to date. As China's first free-standing Expo Pavilion beyond its own borders, the design and construction of the project raised a number of issues relevant to current architectural discourse: temporality and the legacy of Expos; nationality and representation; instant place-making and iconicity; and the relationship between parametric design and craft. This book is not conceived as a monograph that focuses on one project. Instead, it carefully examines the larger ideas woven into the design of the China Pavilion and explores their implications for design and global culture. In addition to presenting the story of the project - from conception through construction and occupancy - the book addresses the larger design forces at play via discussions with key figures in the architecture community. The parallel reading of the Pavilion dialogues and the project sections provides a deeper understanding of the process of conceiving an Expo, the constraints associated with building within an Expo environment, and the potential for global cultural exchange that is only possible through an event in which thousands of people from diverse backgrounds converge in one locale for a brief moment in time to share ideas and experiences within a physical space that embodies the diversity of global culture. The ideas seen in the China Pavilion are discussed and expanded by a respected group of professionals, with contributions by Stefano Boeri, Italian architect and one of the original master planners for Expo Milano 2015; Dr. Xiangning Li, Assistant Dean and Professor at Tongji University College of Architecture and Urban Planning and Visiting Professor in Architecture at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design; Daniel Libeskind, the internationally renowned architect and designer of the Vanke Pavilion for Expo Milano 2015; and Studio Link-Arc, the architects of the China Pavilion.

Cities have contributed for centuries to the promotion of some of humanity's greatest ideas, we must now urgently include them as among the principal players in the environmental debate and at the forefront of any policy tackling and countering - possibly reversing - climate change. Nevertheless, even today one of the most significant technologies capable of absorbing CO2 and restoring our environment is photosynthesis. Planting trees, in addition to protecting existing natural areas and biodiversity, together with de-carbonization, renewable energies, digitalization, smart mobility and the circular economy could be the set of strategies necessary to tackle climate change. Today the effects of the Anthropocene age are ever more visible, changing our environment and affecting every species that lives within it. Green Obsession offers a path to be taken, a hard but still necessary paradigm shift - even for architecture and urbanism - that aims to give a voice to this much needed ecological transition. This book aims to unveil the processes and the complexity involved in the search for a new kind of urbanism, while raising questions and opening old wounds related to the relationship between the human species and Nature and finally putting these fragments together to create a portrait of our era. We need to conceive cities as new green catalysts. Now more than ever, it is essential to act together as separate individuals and professionals, joining the cause as members of the global community with a shared environmental strategy. We all have to open the era of a new alliance between Nature and City.

Color is inextricably linked with architecture; as a design element and also as an inherent quality, it characterizes the shape and texture of the built fabric. The book presents extraordinary color schemes, both in terms of technology and aesthetics, for ground-breaking architecture with a wide spectrum of functions: from apartment to concert hall, from flagship store to city park. The focus is on the works of the three architects Frank O. Gehry, Jean Nouvel and Wang Shu. This is expanded by the works of other practices such as BIG, Zaha Hadid, Herzog & de Meuron, Toyo Ito and SANAA.This publication presents a compendium that documents color schemes in architecture in the context of very different aesthetic approaches. The large-format photographs by Iwan Baan, Christian Richters, Roland Halbe and Philippe Ruault fascinate with their clarity and presence.
