In the past three decades pioneering research about daily coercive interactions in relationships has shed light on the development and treatment of multiple mental health problems and school safety issues. This handbook brings together the expertise and the perspective of leading scholars and intervention developers in an effort to interpret and clarify coercive dynamics and discuss interventions that reduce coercion and improve health and adjustment. Researchers examine social, physiological, and genetic correlates of coercion dynamics from multiple perspectives, including an evolutionary framework. Coercion is explored with respect to the etiology of aggression, antisocial behavior, violence, anxiety disorders, suicidal behavior, and academic adjustment. Interventions are described that effectively reduce coercion in families, romantic and peer relationships, committed adult intimate relationships, schools, and among youths and families with autism. Several chapters illustrate methodological, measurement, and conceptual issues that enhance the scientific understanding of how daily coercive interactions influence adjustment over time. Also offered are prospects for prosocial cooperation free of coercive dynamics and strategies for disseminating interventions across global communities for promoting public health and well-being.

Professional specialists, using market research and promotional campaigns, have come to dominate public communication. The modern public of the Enlightenment, based on free discussion, has, in Leon Mayhew's terms, been replaced by a 'New Public,' subject to mass persuasion through systematic advertising, lobbying, and other forms of media manipulation. Mayhew examines this sociological development in terms of discourse and social influence, offering an original theory which bridges Talcott Parsons and Jurgen Habermas. Most importantly, he shows how the rhetorical techniques of the professional communicators are designed to avoid having to defend their claims, thereby precluding meaningful discussion of public issues. As a result, institutions providing forums for good-faith, two-way discourse no longer exist, community through communication cannot be achieved, and the social order is unstable.

The Morality of Spin explores the ethics of political rhetoric crafted to persuade and possibly manipulate potential voters. Based on extensive insider interviews with leaders of Focus on the Family, one of the most powerful Christian right organizations in America, Nathaniel Klemp asks whether the tactic of tailoring a message to a particular audience is politically legitimate or amounts to democratic malpractice. Klemp's nuanced assessment, highlighting both democratic vices and virtues of the politi

This book is a collection of 12 papers dealing with manipulation and ideology in the 20th century, mostly with reference to political speeches by the leaders of major totalitarian regimes, but also addressing propaganda within contemporary right-wing populism and western ideological rhetoric. This book aims at bringing together researchers in the field of ideology reproduction in order to better understand the underlying mechanisms of speaker-favourable belief inculcation through language use. The book covers a wide range of theoretical perspectives, from psychosocial approaches and discourse analysis to semantics and cognitive linguistics and pragmatics. The book's central concern is to provide not only a reference work with up-to-date information on the analysis of manipulation in discourse but also a number of tools for the scholar, some of them being developed within theories originally not designed to address belief-change through language interpretation. Foreword by Frans van Eemeren.
