Abstract

"Ever since the 1969 Stonewall Riots, “gay pride” has been the rallying cry of the gay rights movement and the political force behind the emergence of the field of lesbian and gay studies. But has something been lost, forgotten, or buried beneath the drive to transform homosexuality from a perversion to a proud social identity? Have the political requirements of gay pride repressed discussion of the more uncomfortable or undignified aspects of homosexuality? Gay Shame seeks to lift this unofficial ban on the investigation of homosexuality and shame by presenting critical work from the most vibrant frontier in contemporary queer studies. An esteemed list of contributors tackles a range of issues—questions of emotion, disreputable sexual histories, dissident gender identities, and embarrassing figures and moments in gay history—as they explore the possibility of reclaiming shame as a new, even productive, way to examine lesbian and gay culture. Accompanied by a DVD collection of films, performances, and archival imagery, Gay Shame constitutes nothing less than a major redefinition and revitalization of the field." --

Abstract

"Most of us recognize that climate change is real, and yet we do nothing to stop it. What is this psychological mechanism that allows us to know something is true but act as if it is not? George Marshall's search for the answers brings him face-to-face with Nobel Prize-winning psychologists and the activists of the Texas Tea Party; the world's leading climate scientists and the people who denounce them; liberal environmentalists and conservative evangelicals. What he discovers is that our values, assumptions, and prejudices can take on lives of their own, gaining authority as they are shared, dividing people in their wake. With engaging stories and drawing on years of his own research, Marshall argues that the answers do not lie in the things that make us different and drive us apart, but rather in what we all share: how our human brains are wired--our evolutionary origins, our perceptions of threats, our cognitive blind spots, our love of storytelling, our fear of death, and our deepest instincts to defend our family and tribe. Once we understand what excites, threatens, and motivates us, we can rethink and reimagine climate change, for it is not an impossible problem. In the end, Don't even think about it is both about climate change and about the qualities that make us human and how we can grow as we deal with the greatest challenge we have ever faced" --Book jacket.

Abstract

This latest volume of 'Studies in Medievalism' further explores definitions of the field, complementing its landmark predecessor. In its first section, essays by seven leading medievalists seeks to determine precisely how to characterize the subjects of study, their relationship to new and related fields, such as neomedievalism, and their relevance to the middle ages, whose definition is itself a matter of debate. Their observations and conclusions are then tested in the articles second part of the book. Their topics include the notion of progress over the last eighty or ninety years in our perception of the middle ages; medievalism in Gustave Doré's mid-nineteenth-century engravings of the 'Divine Comedy'; the role of music in Peter Jackson's 'Lord of the Rings' films; cinematic representations of the Holy Grail; the medieval courtly love tradition in Jeanette Winterson's 'The Passion' and 'The.Powerbook'; Eleanor of Aquitaine in twentieth-century histories; modern updates of the Seven Deadly Sins; and Victorian spins on Jacques de Voragine's 'Golden Legend'. Abstract

Since 9/11, gay men and women have experienced relative liberation in parts of the Western world. Coinciding with queer and transgender mobilisations, contemporary queer identity is changing, homosexuality has become acceptable within the army and the police, and (heavily de-sexualised) images of same-sex affection have become mainstream. In Queer Lovers and Hateful Others, however, Jin Haritaworn challenges this progression by exposing what happens to this discourse when sexuality and the racial or religious 'Other' collide. He discusses how the sexual understanding of 'terror' has become increasingly prevalent across the globe in a destructive and overarching ideology. For example, he discusses how gendered images of Islam such as the veil and 'honour crimes' are circulated, largely unchallenged. He looks at movements on the ground, such as how anti-Islam activists have been able to mobilise existing notions of 'Muslim sexism' in order to mainstream a new discourse on 'Muslim homophobia'. Important, timely and innovative, this book provides an exciting engagement with pressing political issues regarding current trends within sexual and gender politics in the neo-colonial world order.
