Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

“The relations between art and design are not easy to theorize, because they are always spontaneous and discontinuous. At one time art produced new languages and design used them. Today, though, we see artists using languages invented by design, while designers are invited to exhibit at Documenta, and in galleries and museums. It’s clear, then, that this theory of a one-way transfer of languages is obsolete...“ (A. Branzi) At the heart of the debates which over the past twenty years have made design what it is, the work developed by Andrea Branzi stands out as that of a theorician of design, as much in terms of his production, his writing and lecturing.

Abstract

Abstract

This volume emphasizes the multiple correspondences between well-known radical design groups like Arte Povera, Archizoom, and Superstudio, and figures such as Ettore Sottsass and Alessandro Mendini, and previously overlooked spaces, works, and performances generated by Zoo, Gruppo 9999, and Cavart. Newly commissioned interviews and essays by historians, curators and critics shed new light on the era under scrutiny, while contemporary practitioners, discuss its complex legacy

Abstract

"From radical research to contemporary design, this book collects Andrea Branzi’s work about city-design and a new opportunity to interpret and anticipate the next dynamics of society. Territories that are conceptual categories, through spaces that are offered up by reality such that design can act and perform cognitively: in this sense, the city becomes a critical concept capable of overcoming its own image. Each passage presents a precise anthropological articulation: from the concept of commodity civilization of the Sixties to that of immateriality, from the concept of the metropolis to that of the anthropological territory, in which the infinitely small and the immensely large coincide, to the point of generating and passing beyond our commonly held concept of the city. Starting from the Andrea Branzi's reflection on the relationship civility-design, from the Radical's research on mass-production civilization to the "infinite territories", the book proposes new territories able to interpret and anticipate the new dynamics of society. In particular, if the first chapters review the historical/critical works of Andrea Branzi and of 'Radical Movement', the last opens a new parenthesis of research, right now never expressed: the issues ignored by Modernity, like life, death, destiny and the sacred: themes which underline the new drama and the fracture between tragedy and normality, between consumerism and death, between theology and technology, between the silence of reason and the voice of an irrational reality."

Abstract

"SuperDesign' is the only comprehensive look at the short-lived but powerfully influential movement known as Italian Radical design. In numerous exclusive interviews, unreleased photographs, original drawings and artwork unearthed from personal archives, and newly commissioned photography of rarely seen works. What started as a largely student-led rally against the establishment and a rejection of accepted design norms became a movement that brought together some of the most dynamic and avant-garde thinkers and creative makers across the country. Through enigmatic, confrontational, and even distasteful objects and interiors, peppered with subversive performances and astonishingly innovative advertising campaigns, the Radicals projected design's new era as equal parts pop art, surrealism, play, and futurism. Alongside the exclusive primary source material, 'SuperDesign' features additional essays by top design scholars Deyan Sudjic and Catharine Rossi, as well as prominent collector Dennis Freedman. This book demystifies these fantastic works and tells the stories behind the often contentious relationships between the key figures of the movement (some of whom remain at odds still, nearly fifty years later)"--Publisher's description.

Abstract

'Narrative Architecture' reveals a stream of remarkable architectural and urban visions in the twentieth century that culminated in the construction of one of the most powerful, misunderstood and underutilized weapons of architectural and urban critique, thinking and representation. This historical genealogy in three parts weaves inseparable modern architecture and narrative critique through never before seen images of half a century of utopian, heroic, commercial, ironic and critical projects by Le Corbusier, Team 10, Constant, Victor Gruen, Yona Friedman, Archizoom, Superstudio and Rem Koolhaas. Alluding to Diogenes, the ancient kynic who wandered with a lantern in search of an honest man, through narrative, archival and provocative images and texts, the book lays the groundwork in search of an honest architecture able to question the pressing challenges of our times.
